Chapter 4 - The Shadow from the PastAn Unwanted EncounterTwenty-four hours after the failed raid on the penthouse, Jared moved his entire operation to his private coastal estate in Long Island—a sprawling, heavily fortified mansion surrounded by high stone walls, private security checkpoints, and pine forests.

Titan was thriving. The fresh sea air, combined with his newfound bond with Willa, had restored his appetite completely. He was running across the vast green lawns, his silver fur shining in the sun, chasing tennis balls that Willa threw for him.
Willa sat on a white marble bench near the cliffside garden, watching the waves crash against the rocks below.
She wore a long, comfortable knit sweater Jared had bought for her. She looked healthier, her skin blooming with natural color, her hazel eyes bright. The quiet safety of the estate had begun to heal the deep, invisible wounds she had carried for years.
Footsteps echoed on the gravel path.
Jared walked up to her, wearing a crisp dark suit, though he had discarded his tie. He carried two mugs of hot coffee, handing one to her as he sat beside her on the bench.
"He looks like a puppy again," Jared noted softly, watching Titan bound across the grass.
"He just needed love, Jared," Willa said, taking a sip of the warm coffee. "Not money. Not force. Just someone to be there when it hurt."
Jared looked down at his own calloused hands, tracing a small scar on his knuckle. "I didn't know how to do that. When my brother died... I thought the only way to honor him was to tear down everyone who was involved. I forgot about the dog. I forgot about... feeling anything."
He turned his dark eyes onto Willa, his gaze intense, honest, and filled with a rare, vulnerable warmth. "Until you walked through that door."
Willa felt her heart jump into her throat. "Jared..."
"Boss," Miles’s voice interrupted, sharp and tense as he hurried down the stone path holding an encrypted tablet.
Jared’s expression instantly turned back to steel. "What is it?"
"We have a situation at the outer gate," Miles reported, glancing nervously at Willa. "A man managed to hitch a ride in the back of a food delivery truck that passed through the security perimeter. Our perimeter guards caught him trying to sneak toward the east wing."
Willa’s coffee mug shook in her hands. "Who is it?"
Miles hesitated, then met her eyes. "His name is Brendan Vance."
The mug slipped from Willa’s hands, shattering against the marble floor, hot coffee splashing across the stone. All the color drained from her face in an instant, her breathing turning fast, shallow, and panicked.
Brendan.
The ghost that had haunted her dreams for two years. The man whose voice still made her flinch in the dark.
"How did he find me?" she whispered, her voice cracking with pure terror.
"He didn't find you," Miles explained. "He’s been desperate. He hired a private investigator six months ago who tracked your old clinic job. When you vanished with us, he started stalking our transport vehicles. He thought you were being held hostage for money."
Jared stood up slowly, his broad frame blocking the sun, casting a massive, protective shadow over Willa. His dark eyes flared with an absolute, merciless fury that made even Miles take a step back.
"Bring him to the stone courtyard," Jared commanded quietly.
"Jared, no!" Willa gasped, grabbing his sleeve, her eyes wide with panic. "Don't... don't go near him! He’s crazy, he’s—"

Jared reached down, gently taking her face in his large, warm hands. His touch was soft, reverent, completely contrasting the lethal anger burning in his eyes.
"Listen to me, Willa," Jared said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic hum. "You spent two years running from this ghost. Today, the running stops. You are going to stand beside me, and you are going to watch him realize how powerless he truly is."
