Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Machine

By midnight, the lights in the Ridgewood Heights estate were completely dark, but inside the basement service quarters, a quiet, high-stakes operation was underway.

Dante sat at a small wooden table illuminated by the glow of a laptop Elena had smuggled into the house weeks ago. Using an encrypted satellite uplink, he was quietly routing through the secondary servers of Marchetti Logistics, bypassing the firewall Vincent had installed.

"Look at this," Elena whispered, leaning over his shoulder, pointing at a string of digital transactions scrolling across the screen. "He didn't just siphon money from Pier 7. He's been selling our shipping manifests to the Russian syndicate operating out of Boston. That's how they knew about our cargo shipments last winter."

Dante’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. The Russian syndicate—their most bitter, violent rivals. Vincent hadn't just been stealing from the family; he had been selling them out to the highest bidder, orchestrating hits and ambushes under the guise of corporate friction.

"He's setting up the final transfer right now," Dante said, his fingers flying across the keyboard, executing a counter-script he had written during his years in the syndicate's intelligence unit. "He thinks he's locking me out. What he doesn't know is that my father's original administrative override key was never digitized. It's hardcoded into the legacy mainframe at the downtown warehouse."

"The old dock warehouse on 4th Street," Elena said, her eyes widening. "The one that was supposed to be demolished last year."

"It's still standing," Dante said, standing up and grabbing his coat. "And that's where Vincent keeps his physical ledger—the black book containing the names of every bought-out judge, corrupt cop, and rat in the city."

"If we get that book before the board meeting," Elena realized, "we don't just stop his corporate coup. We destroy him legally, publicly, and permanently."

"It's a trap," Dante warned, looking down at her. "Vincent knows the legacy mainframe is the only way to reverse his master transfer. He's going to be waiting there with every loyalist he has left on the payroll."

"Then we better give him something to look at while we slip in the back," Elena said, a cool, calculating smile touching her lips—a look Dante had never seen on her before, and one he suddenly found entirely captivating.
