Chapter 5 - Blood on 4th Street

The abandoned warehouse on 4th Street loomed like a rotting skeletal cage against the rain-swept midnight sky. Inside, the cavernous space was lit only by the harsh glare of halogen work lights set up around a central office container.

Vincent Cole stood by a metal desk, his tailored suit immaculate, smoking a cigarette as he stared at a computer monitor displaying the countdown timer for the final asset transfer.

"Any word from the hospital detail?" Vincent asked without turning around.

One of his enforcers, a burly brute named Marcus, stepped out from the shadows. "The room was empty when the morning shift checked in, boss. The nurse said someone smuggled him out in a private sedan."

Vincent took a slow drag of his cigarette, his expression darkening. "I knew we should have crushed his skull on that harbor road instead of relying on a truck collision. The man is a cockroach."

"What do you want us to do?" Marcus asked, resting a hand on his holster.

"Lock down every exit," Vincent ordered coldly. "If he's alive, he'll come for the legacy mainframe. He always thought he was the smartest man in the room."

What Vincent didn't know was that Dante Marchetti wasn't coming through the front door.

While Marcus and four armed enforcers guarded the main entrance, a rusted side ventilation shaft on the upper catwalk squeaked open. Elena slipped through first, dropping silently onto the metal grating like a cat, followed closely by Dante, who suppressed a grunt of pain as his boots hit the floor.

They moved with practiced, synchronized stealth through the catwalks above the main floor, looking down at Vincent and his men.

"You take the mainframe terminal," Dante whispered into Elena's ear, his breath warm against her temple. "I'll draw them away."

"Dante—" she started, but he was already moving, scaling down a rusted drainpipe toward the far corner of the warehouse.

A second later, a loud clatter echoed near the back storage bays as Dante kicked over a stack of empty metal shelving units.

"Over there!" Marcus barked, waving his men toward the sound. "Spread out! Find him!"

Vincent spun around, his eyes scanning the shadows as his remaining guards rushed into the maze of crates.

Seizing the opening, Elena dropped down from the catwalk ladder directly behind the office container. She scrambled toward the legacy terminal, plugging her encrypted flash drive into the archaic port just as the progress bar on the screen began to flash.

Transfer Interrupted. Authentication Required.

She flew through the keystrokes, entering the string of master override codes Dante had given her.

"Well, well, well," a smooth, venomous voice drawled from the doorway of the office container.

Elena froze.

She turned slowly. Vincent Cole stood there, a revolver held casually in his hand, a cold, mocking smile curling his lips.

"If it isn't the invisible housekeeper," Vincent chuckled, stepping closer. "I always wondered what you were really doing in that house, cleaning up after ghosts. Figured you were just another drifter with a sob story. Turns out you're just as stupid as your late husband."

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her hands remained steady on the keyboard. "My husband's name was Arthur Cross," she said, her voice ringing clear and cold through the empty warehouse. "And he's the reason you're going to burn for this, Vincent."

Vincent raised the barrel of the gun, his smile vanishing into pure malice. "Say hello to him for me."

Before his finger could tighten on the trigger, a heavy steel shipping hook came swinging out of the darkness with devastating force, catching Vincent square in the chest and sending him crashing backward over the metal desk.

Dante stepped out from the shadows, his face an mask of unbridled fury, the Sig Sauer P226 raised and locked dead center on Vincent’s forehead.

"Drop the gun, Vincent," Dante snarled.

Vincent gasped for air, scrambling backward on the floor, clutching his bruised chest. He looked up at Dante, then over at Elena, who calmly pulled the flash drive—now blinking green with completed data extraction—from the terminal and slipped it into her pocket.

"You... you're a dead man, Dante," Vincent wheezed, a bloody grin spreading across his face. "The board owns the police. They own the judges. Even if you kill me here, you'll spend the rest of your life running."

"I'm not going to kill you, Vincent," Dante said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register. "Prisons are full of men who deserve a quick death. I'm going to let you live long enough to watch every single asset, every shell company, and every corrupt ally you built your little empire on get systematically dismantled in federal court."

Sirens suddenly wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second, flashing red and blue lights painting the cracked warehouse windows.

Elena pulled out her burner phone, flashing the screen at Vincent. "Anonymous tip sent to the FBI organized crime task force ten minutes ago," she said sweetly. "Along with a full mirror backup of your offshore accounts."

Vincent’s face turned the color of ash. All the arrogance, all the polished control evaporated in an instant, leaving behind a terrified, cornered rat.
