Chapter 6 - Dawn over Ridgewood Heights
Three weeks later, the rain had finally cleared, leaving the streets of Baltimore washed in the crisp, golden light of early morning.
The front gates of the Ridgewood Heights estate stood open, but the heavy iron no longer felt like a prison. Inside the grand foyer, the crystal chandelier was bathed in brilliant sunlight, casting prismatic rainbows across the polished marble floor.
Dante Marchetti stood by the second-floor study window, watching a yellow school bus pull up to the corner of the street. Watched as a bright, laughing ten-year-old girl with dark curls skipped off the bus and ran up the stone pathway toward the front door.
Elena stood beside him, holding a steaming mug of coffee, watching her daughter come home where she belonged.
The federal indictments against Vincent Cole and three-quarters of the syndicate's corrupt board members had dropped across the front pages of every major newspaper two days ago. The empire was changing—cleansed of its rot, reorganized under transparent corporate structures, and stripped of the blood money that had poisoned it for decades.
Dante turned his head, looking down at Elena. Without the constant weight of fear and secrecy, she looked lighter, her eyes bright and clear, standing tall without a trace of the invisible burden she had carried for fifteen years.
"You don't have to wear the apron anymore, you know," Dante said quietly, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth.
Elena looked up at him, tilting her head with a playful, assessing glint in her dark eyes. "And who is going to make sure you drink your coffee before it gets cold, Mr. Marchetti?"

"I suppose," Dante murmured, pulling her just a fraction closer as the front door downstairs opened and little footsteps echoed up the stairs, "you'll just have to stay and find out."
