Chapter 3 - Gathering the Ghosts

Twenty-four hours later, the rain had ceased, leaving behind a low, thick fog that rolled across the streets of Manhattan like a shroud.

The media was already buzzing with rumors. Headlines across local news outlets reported an emergency gathering of organized crime figures in Little Italy. Damian Costa had wasted no time. He had declared himself acting boss of the Falcone syndicate, claiming that Matteo’s tragic death in Sicily demanded immediate retaliation against rival families.

Inside a modest brownstone apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, an old man sat in a leather armchair beside a dimly lit window, staring down at a chessboard.

Marco Valenti, sixty-five years old, had served as the Consigliere to the Falcone family for thirty years. His hair was snow-white, his face carved with deep lines of wisdom and hard experience. For the past two days, two armed men loyal to Damian had been standing across the street, keeping Marco under virtual house arrest under the guise of "protecting the senior leadership."

A soft knock sounded at Marco’s back door—three quick taps, followed by two slow ones.

Marco’s eyes flickered with sudden life. That was a private code known only to four people in the world. Two of them were dead. One was a traitor.

Marco picked up a small revolver from his side table, walked quietly into his kitchen, and unlocked the heavy wooden service door.

Standing in the alleyway darkness was a young woman in a dark raincoat, holding a basket of fresh groceries. Behind her, emerging from the deep shadows of the stairwell, was a tall man wearing a flat cap and a dark wool coat, his collar pulled high around his throat.

The man lifted his head.

Marco gasped, dropping his revolver onto the linoleum floor. His hands began to shake uncontrollably. "M-Matteo... Madonna Mia... you’re alive..."

"Keep your voice down, Marco," Matteo said smoothly, stepping into the kitchen and closing the door behind him. Sofia followed instantly, locking the bolt and setting the groceries on the counter.

Marco grabbed Matteo by the shoulders, weeping silent tears of relief as he embraced the young man he had helped raise. "They said you were burned to ashes in Palermo! Damian called a Commission meeting for tomorrow night at the Plaza Hotel to formalize his ascension!"

"I know," Matteo said, leading Marco into the living room, out of sight of the street windows. "Damian planted the bomb himself, with help from Camilla."

Marco’s face paled. "Camilla? Santissima Maria... the Rossi girl?"

"She was in it from the beginning," Matteo replied, his tone icy. "They intended to take the empire, split the assets, and eliminate anyone loyal to my father’s line."

Matteo gestured toward Sofia, who stood quietly near the doorway, keeping a watchful eye on the rear alley. "This is Sofia Bennett. Her father was Leo Bennett. She saved my life at the estate, Marco. Without her, I would be a corpse in the cellar."

Marco looked at Sofia with deep respect, bowing his head slightly. "Leo was an honorable man. His daughter carries his blood well. Welcome to my home, child."

Sofia offered a small, grateful nod. "Thank you, Mr. Valenti."

Matteo leaned against the edge of Marco’s desk, turning his attention back to the chess board. "Tell me about the Commission, Marco. Who stands with Damian, and who is hesitating?"

"The old capos—Santoro, Moretti, and Luchesi—are suspicious," Marco explained, his tone growing sharp and analytical. "Damian is pushing too fast. He’s offering lucrative narcotics routes to the Russian syndicates in Brighton Beach—routes your father and you explicitly banned for twenty years. Santoro knows that bringing heavy drugs into our territory will bring the federal government down on all of us."

"Damian is greedy," Matteo noted. "Greed makes men sloppy."

"He has bought off the young lieutenants with promises of fast money," Marco continued. "And tomorrow night at eight o’clock, in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, Damian plans to sign a formal alliance with the Russian boss, Nikolai Volkov, while taking the oath as head of the Falcone family. Once that contract is signed in front of the Commission, it will be nearly impossible to unseat him without an all-out war that destroys the city."

Matteo stared at the black king on Marco’s chessboard. He reached out, his long fingers gently tipping the piece onto its side.

"Then we will not let him sign it," Matteo said quietly.

"Matteo, you cannot simply walk into the Plaza with a gun," Marco warned, his brow furrowed with anxiety. "Damian will have fifty armed men inside that ballroom. Volkov will have his own private security force. It will be a bloodbath, and you will be outnumbered ten to one."

"I am not going in alone, Marco," Matteo replied, a dark, brilliant spark gleaming in his grey eyes. "And I am not going in to start a war. I am going in to hold a trial."

Matteo turned to Sofia. "Sofia, tomorrow you will need to perform the most dangerous task of your life. Are you ready?"

May you like

Sofia stepped forward without a single moment of hesitation, her chin held high, her hazel eyes burning with fierce resolve.

"I have waited four years to bring down the men who murdered my father, Mr. Falcone," she said softly. "Tell me what you need me to do."
