Chapter 5 - Fire and Retribution

Silence—absolute, suffocating silence—fell over the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel.
Men who had spent thirty years in the brutal underworld stared at the figure in the doorway as if they were looking at a ghost risen from the depths of hell.
Matteo walked down the center aisle with slow, deliberate steps. He did not carry a weapon in his hands. His posture was imposing, his presence commanding absolute, unshakeable authority. Walking three paces behind him were Marco Valenti and twenty veteran Falcone enforcers, all clad in dark tactical suits, their weapons held at low ready.
"M-Matteo..." Damian stammered, backing away from the podium, his face pale as chalk. "It... it’s an illusion... he’s dead! Shoot him!"
Not a single guard moved.
Old Capo Santoro stood up from his table, his eyes fixed on Damian with murderous disgust. "Sit down, Damian," Santoro growled, his voice like grinding stones. "The ghost is speaking."
Matteo stopped at the base of the raised dais, looking up at the two traitors standing before him.
Camilla was shaking violently, clutching Damian’s arm, her aristocratic composure completely destroyed. She looked at Matteo as if he were a monster come to claim her soul.
"You thought four hundred grams of C4 was enough to kill me, Damian?" Matteo spoke, his voice carrying clearly into every corner of the silent hall without the aid of a microphone. "You thought you could buy my empire with dirty Russian money and hand my ring to a snake?"
"Matteo, listen to me!" Damian cried out, reaching into his jacket for his firearm!
BANG!
A single sharp gunshot echoed through the room.
Damian screamed, dropping to his knees as his pistol clattered to the floor. Blood spurted from his shattered hand.
Standing on the side balcony above the stage, holding a smoking sniper rifle, was Sofia Bennett. She lowered the weapon slightly, her hazel eyes fixed on Damian with cold, unyielding precision.
Matteo walked up the steps of the dais, stopping directly in front of Damian. He looked down at his former best friend without a single shred of pity.
"You murdered Leo Bennett four years ago," Matteo said quietly, his tone dropping into a deadly whisper that only Damian and Camilla could hear. "You murdered my loyal guards in the Hamptons. And you tried to bury me in Palermo. Your debt has come due, Damian."
"Matteo... please..." Camilla sobbed, throwing herself onto her knees at his feet, grabbing the hem of his trousers. "He forced me! Damian threatened to kill my family if I didn't help him! I love you, Matteo! I have always loved you!"
Matteo looked down at the woman he had once planned to spend his life with. The diamond necklace glinted around her throat—a stark contrast to the ugliness of her soul.
Without a word, Matteo reached down, hooked his fingers behind the diamond necklace, and snapped the golden chain with a cold, effortless tug. He let the diamonds fall to the floor, where they rolled into the pool of Damian’s blood.
"You are nothing to me," Matteo said softly.
He turned to the Commission bosses sitting in the audience.
"Capo Santoro, Capo Moretti," Matteo called out. "Is there any man in this room who questions my right to lead this family?"
Old Santoro stood up, raising his glass high into the air. "Long live Matteo Falcone! The true king!"
Every boss in the room stood up in unison, their voices echoing in a deafening chorus that shook the crystal chandeliers: "LONG LIVE FALCONE!"
Nikolai Volkov, seeing the tide turn completely, slowly closed his briefcase and backed away into the shadows, signaling his men to drop their weapons. He was a businessman; he knew when a war was lost.
Matteo turned back to his loyal enforcers. "Take Damian Costa and Camilla Rossi to the docks. Let them reflect upon their choices in the cold depths of the Atlantic."
Damian screamed and begged as four heavy security guards dragged him and the hysterical Camilla out through the side exit, their cries echoing down the hallway until the heavy doors slammed shut forever.
The room cleared slowly as Marco and the captains took control of the logistics, restoring order and securing the syndicate’s operations across the city.
Matteo stood alone on the raised dais for a moment, letting out a long, slow breath as the heavy burden of betrayal finally began to lift from his chest.
He turned his head toward the side balcony stairs.
Sofia was walking down the steps, holding her rifle by her side. She had removed her waitress apron, her dark hair falling softly around her shoulders. She looked tired, her shoulders slouched slightly from the immense strain of the past forty-eight hours, but her hazel eyes were clear, bright, and victorious.
Matteo walked down the steps of the dais to meet her.
They stood in the center of the grand, empty ballroom, illuminated by the soft golden light of the restored chandeliers.
"It is done, Sofia," Matteo said softly. "Your father has his justice."
Sofia looked up at him, a gentle tear slipping down her cheek—not a tear of sorrow, but one of profound relief and peace. "Thank you, Mr. Falcone."
Matteo reached out, his warm, strong hand gently catching the tear on her cheek with his thumb.
"No more 'Mr. Falcone', Sofia," he said, his voice dropping into a tender, gentle tone she had never heard him use before. "From now on... it’s just Matteo."
May you like
Sofia smiled—a radiant, beautiful smile that lit up her entire face. She reached up, resting her hand over his on her cheek.
"Just Matteo," she whispered softly.
