Chapter 4 - The Masquerade of Treason

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a monument to old-world luxury. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings painted with classical frescoes, casting brilliant golden light across polished marble floors, velvet-draped tables, and champagne towers.
It was seven o’clock on Thursday evening.
Outside, a fleet of black luxury sedans lined Fifth Avenue. Inside, over a hundred high-ranking figures of New York’s underworld gathered in formal tuxedos, mingling under the watchful eyes of heavily armed security guards posted at every exit.
Sitting at the high table on the raised dais was Damian Costa.
He looked immaculate in a custom black tuxedo, a crimson silk pocket square tucked neatly into his jacket. Beside him sat Camilla Rossi, wearing a breathtaking floor-length gown of black velvet, adorned with a diamond necklace that Matteo had gifted her for her twenty-fifth birthday. She was holding a flute of vintage champagne, smiling effortlessly as syndicate captains approached the table to pay their respects.
Standing in the gallery above the ballroom, dressed in a black waitress uniform with her hair tucked neatly into a sleek bun, was Sofia.
She carried a silver tray with champagne flutes, moving gracefully through the crowd, her face kept low and modest—the invisible servant everyone ignored. Beneath her apron, hidden in a secure leather holster against her ribs, was a small, high-capacity USB drive containing encrypted financial transfers recovered from Damian’s private desk during a daring thirty-minute break-in at the Hamptons estate early that morning.
Sofia paused near the VIP lounge, where Nikolai Volkov—a massive Russian man with a scarred neck and diamond rings on every finger—was speaking with Damian.
"The contracts are ready, Damian," Volkov said in a heavy accent, tapping a leather briefcase on his lap. "Once the Commission witnesses your oath, we sign the shipping dock leases. Five hundred kilos of product move through Brooklyn every month. You get thirty percent."
"A pleasure doing business with you, Nikolai," Damian smiled, clinking his glass against Volkov’s. "Matteo was too soft. He belonged to a bygone era. He thought honor could pay the bills."
"And his fiancée?" Volkov chuckled, glancing toward Camilla. "She transitions smoothly to the new management."
Damian laughed softly. "Camilla knows where the real power lies."
Sofia kept her face entirely blank as she stepped forward, offering fresh glasses of champagne to both men.
"Excuse me, sir," Sofia said in a soft, polite tone, keeping her voice pitched low.
Damian barely looked at her, waving his hand dismissively as he took a glass from her tray. "Run along, girl."
Sofia bowed her head and backed away into the crowd, her heart pounding against her ribs like a sledgehammer. She navigated her way through the maze of tuxedo-clad mobsters toward the backstage service corridor.
Standing beside the electrical junction room in the basement service hallway was Marco Valenti, dressed in his classic charcoal suit.
"Is the drive secured?" Marco whispered as Sofia approached.
Sofia pulled the small USB drive from her apron and handed it to Marco. "It contains every offshore account transfer between Damian, Camilla, and Volkov, dated two months before Matteo went to Sicily. It proves they plotted his murder to sell the syndicate’s assets to the Russians."
"Excellent work, my dear," Marco said, his eyes filled with grim satisfaction. He plugged the drive into a portable laptop connected directly to the hotel’s master audio-visual projection system. "Matteo’s team has already secured the perimeter doors and taken control of the security control room upstairs. The trap is set."
Sofia looked toward the heavy double doors leading into the ballroom. Her hands were cold, but her spirit was an unyielding flame.
"Where is Matteo?" she asked softly.
"He is where he belongs," Marco replied, opening the control program on his laptop. "In the shadows... waiting for the signal."
Upstairs in the ballroom, the heavy chimes sounded, signaling the start of the formal ceremony.
The room quieted down as Damian Costa stood up from the high table and walked to the polished wooden podium in the center of the dais. Camilla stood proudly beside him, her hands clasped in front of her dress, her eyes shining with cruel ambition.
Damian adjusted his microphone, his voice echoing clearly through the massive hall.
"Brothers of the Commission, honored guests," Damian began, putting on a grand display of somber authority. "We gather tonight under the dark shadow of tragedy. Three days ago, our beloved leader, Matteo Falcone, was cowardly assassinated in Sicily by rival forces who wished to weaken our family."
A few older capos in the audience grumbled softly, crossing their arms.
"In this time of grief," Damian continued, raising his hands, "we must show strength. We must unite under new leadership to protect our empire and expand our wealth into prosperous new horizons. As acting boss, I am prepared to take the solemn oath of leadership, and to finalize an historic partnership with our friend, Nikolai Volkov!"
The crowd broke into polite, hesitant applause. Volkov stood up, holding his briefcase, preparing to walk to the podium.
Suddenly, the brilliant crystal chandeliers flickered twice... and went pitch black.
A wave of startled gasps and sudden curses echoed through the dark ballroom. Security guards immediately reached for their weapons, the sharp sounds of metal slides racking cutting through the gloom.
"Security! Get the backup generators on!" Damian shouted into the microphone, his voice edged with sudden anxiety. "Hold your positions!"
A second later, the massive digital projection screens mounted on the walls behind the dais flickered to life, bathing the dark ballroom in a harsh, cold blue glow.
An audio recording began to play through the thousand-watt house speakers—a recording so clear, so pristine, that every person in the room froze where they stood.
"Are you certain the detonation was complete?" Camilla’s voice rang out across the hall, sharp and triumphant. "I want no doubts, Damian. I will not have him crawling out of some Mediterranean hospital in three months."
"Relax, mia cara," Damian’s recorded voice replied, accompanied by the sound of ice clinking in a glass. "The bomb was planted directly beneath the floorboards... Four hundred grams of military-grade C4... The great Matteo Falcone... reduced to smoke in the Sicilian wind."
Camilla’s face drained of every drop of color. She let out a sharp, choked scream, dropping her champagne glass onto the floor, where it shattered into a thousand glittering pieces.
Damian’s eyes bulged in pure, unadulterated horror as financial spreadsheets, bank wire transfers, and emails detailing his treason against the Commission began to scroll rapidly across the massive screens for every syndicate boss to see.
"Shut it off!" Damian roared, pounding his fists onto the podium. "SHUT IT OFF NOW!"
Before anyone could move, a single spotlight clicked on at the back of the grand ballroom.

The heavy double entrance doors swung open with a booming crash.
Standing in the bright white beam of light, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his grey eyes cold as winter steel, was Matteo Falcone.
