Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Marble HallsThe silence that followed Isabella’s trembling gesture was heavier than the marble pillars holding up the Moretti estate.

Luca’s gaze remained locked on Naomi. There was no immediate explosion of rage, no shouted accusations—which, to anyone who knew the ruthless mafia boss, was infinitely worse. When Luca Moretti was furious, he didn’t roar; he calculated. His dark eyes narrowed, scanning Naomi’s face for a flicker of guilt, a bead of sweat, a twitch of panic.
Find nothing. Naomi’s breath caught in her throat, but she held her ground, her chin lifting slightly. She refused to cower. She looked past Luca’s formidable frame down at Isabella, whose eyes were wide, wet with tears, and frantically darting back and forth between her son and the scattered papers.
One high note. One low note.
Isabella couldn’t speak, but her eyes were screaming a language Luca was failing to translate.
“Luca,” Vivian sobbed, collapsing gracefully against the doorframe, letting her torn sleeve dangle for dramatic effect. “I walked in to bring Isabella her afternoon tea... and I found her. Naomi was holding her down, forcing her hand onto those papers. When I tried to stop her, she pushed me, tore my clothes, and threatened me. You have to believe me. If you hadn't come home when you did...”
She didn’t need to finish the sentence. The implication hung thick in the air: Naomi was a traitor within the inner sanctum, a hired caretaker corrupted by greed, attempting to steal control of the Moretti estate through a fraudulent incapacity claim.
Luca finally shifted his gaze away from Naomi. He looked down at Vivian, his expression completely blank, masking the churning storm beneath.
“Get out,” Luca said quietly.
Vivian blinked, her tears pausing mid-flow. “Wh-What?”
“Leave the room, Vivian. Now.” His voice was a low, velvet-wrapped blade.
Not daring to push her luck further, Vivian cast one last triumphant, sideways glance at Naomi, straightened her posture, and slipped past Luca into the hallway, pausing just out of sight to listen.
Luca didn't move for a long moment. Then, he walked past Naomi as if she were a ghost, kneeling beside his mother. His massive frame softened instantly as he lifted Isabella with infinite care, gathering her into his arms and setting her gently upon the velvet settee. He took a silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and tenderly wiped the black ink from her thumb, his jaw working tightly.
“Mom,” Luca murmured, his voice cracking with a vulnerability he never showed the outside world. “Look at me. Did she do this?”
Isabella’s chest heaved. She looked at her son, then down at the papers on the floor, and finally toward Naomi. Her hand twitched again, hovering in the air. She looked frantic, her breath hitching. She wanted to slap the air, to strike a high note of absolute negation, but her body betrayed her, freezing into a useless tremor.
Because of the stroke, her hand movement had been misinterpreted. She hadn't been pointing at Naomi as the assailant; she had been pointing past her, toward the doorway where Vivian had just stood—or toward the papers themselves. But to a man whose world was built on paranoia and betrayal, it looked damning.
Luca stood up slowly. The gentle son vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced once again by the cold, untouchable head of the syndicate. He turned to Naomi, his eyes cutting like glass.
“Pack your things,” Luca said, his voice devoid of emotion.
Naomi felt a sharp pain pierce her chest. Not because she feared losing her job, but because of the injustice—because Isabella would be left completely defenseless with the viper Vivian.
“You’re making a mistake,” Naomi said, her voice steady despite the trembling in her hands. “Look at the papers, Mr. Moretti. Look at the date. Look at the legal loopholes. Vivian was stealing your mother’s signature to freeze her medical proxy. I broke the door down to save her.”
“You broke a locked door in a house where every entrance is monitored,” Luca retorted, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from him. “You called me panicked, yet you claim you walked into a robbery in progress without screaming for security. And my mother—the woman who raised me, who knows every soul in this estate—pointed directly at you.”
“She didn't point at me!” Naomi stepped forward, closing the distance between them, her eyes flashing with a fire that caught Luca completely off guard. No one spoke to Luca Moretti that way. No one challenged his perception. “She was trying to warn you about Vivian! If you throw me out of this house tonight, your mother won't survive the week. Vivian will finish what she started.”
Luca stared down at her, towering over her petite frame. For a second, a strange, unreadable tension stretched between them—a dangerous mix of fury, suspicion, and an inexplicable, magnetic pull that neither of them expected.

“You have one hour to clear your quarters,” Luca said coldly, turning his back to her. “If you are on these grounds after that, security won’t escort you out. They will throw you out.”
He walked over to his mother, murmuring soothingly to her, completely ignoring Naomi as she turned away, her heart shattering into a thousand pieces.
