Chapter 3 - Exile and RevelationThe rain was coming down in sheets by the time Naomi stepped through the iron gates of the Moretti estate. The heavy black metal swung shut behind her with a sickening clank, sealing her fate. She clutched a single canvas duffel bag to her chest, the fabric soaked through with cold autumn water.

She had nowhere to go. Her small apartment across town had been given up months ago when she took the live-in position at the estate to care for Isabella full-time. Now, she was adrift in a city ruled by men like Luca Moretti—men who viewed human beings as pawns on a chessboard.

Yet, as she walked toward the dimly lit bus stop three blocks down, her mind wasn't on her own plight. It was on Isabella.

She’s alone with Vivian now.

The thought sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through her veins. Naomi stopped under the flickering light of a streetlamp, water dripping from her hair, and unzipped her duffel bag. Inside, nestled beneath a spare change of clothes, was a small, black leather-bound journal.

For five months, alongside caring for Isabella’s physical needs, Naomi had kept a meticulous care log—recording medication times, dietary notes, subtle changes in health, and, crucially, every single visitor who entered the music room when Luca was away.

She flipped open the wet pages. Most of it was standard medical charting, but tucked into the back pocket was something else: a folded receipt from a high-end notary office downtown, dated just three days ago, bearing Vivian Vance’s signature alongside a shady corporate legal firm known for handling hostile takeovers and asset stripping.

Vivian wasn't just trying to gain medical proxy; she was trying to liquidate Isabella’s private holdings—properties and trust funds that legally belonged to the Moretti matriarch independently of Luca’s syndicate empire. If Vivian succeeded, Isabella would be legally silenced, declared incompetent, and institutionalized within a month, while Vivian walked away with millions.

Naomi stared at the paper in the dim light. Running away was safe. Going to the police was useless—the Moretti name owned half the local precinct, and a maid's word against a billionaire's fiancée would be buried before it reached a desk.

If she wanted to save Isabella, she had to play a much more dangerous game. She had to breach the fortress from the outside.

Meanwhile, back at the estate, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Luca sat in his private study on the third floor, a glass of amber scotch untouched on the mahogany desk before him. The house was too quiet. Without the faint, melodic notes of Chopin drifting up from the music room, the mansion felt less like a home and more like a mausoleum.

His phone buzzed on the desk. It was an encrypted text from his head of security, Marcus.

Boss, I checked the hallway security footage from the east wing like you asked. The audio filters isolated the music room door prior to the break-in.*

Luca frowned, tapping the screen to open the audio file. He plugged his wireless earbuds into his ears and hit play.

The recording crackled with background static. Then came Vivian’s muffled voice from inside the locked room: “Go away.” Then Isabella’s sharp, terrified whimper. Then the sound of Naomi’s frantic phone call, followed a second later by the violent crash of the door splintering open.

Luca froze.

The timeline didn't match Vivian’s story. Vivian had claimed she merely walked in and found Naomi attacking Isabella. But the audio clearly proved that Vivian had locked the door from the inside, kept Naomi out while Isabella cried out in fear, and only opened up after Naomi threatened to break it down.

A cold, deadly realization settled over Luca’s chest. He had banished the wrong person. He had trusted a snake and thrown out the only shield his mother had.

Before Luca could reach for his phone to summon Marcus, a sharp alarm chimed on his computer monitor—a perimeter alert from the estate’s secondary service gate on the north bluff.

Marcus’s voice crackled over the intercom, breathless and urgent.

“Boss! We’ve got an intruder on the grounds. Someone just scaled the north perimeter wall near the old greenhouse. Security teams are converging on the courtyard now!”

Luca stood up so fast his chair crashed backward against the wood paneling. A dark, dangerous grin touched his lips.

Naomi Carter. She hadn't run away. She had come back.
