Chapter 1 - The Vapor Beneath the DoorThe thick white vapor crawling beneath the heavy oak bathroom door had an unmistakable, sweetish almond scent. Cyanide gas.

Before Damian could turn the brass handle, Martha yanked his arm back with desperate force. "Don't! It's an aerosolized cyanide mix. If you open that door, the draft will pull it right into the room before we can reach the emergency vent."

Damian didn't hesitate. His training as a mafia boss under constant siege took over instantly. His slate-gray eyes scanned the ruined bathroom, locking onto the shattered window frame where the sniper's bullet had flown in just minutes earlier.

"The extraction shaft," Damian said, pointing toward the high ceiling above the walk-in shower. "There's an air duct leading to the roof's secondary HVAC manifold. Can you reach it?"

Martha looked up, assessing the height. "If you boost me."

"Do it."

Damian crouched, locking his hands together to form a step. Martha placed her foot in his palm, and with a powerful, coordinated heave, he launched her upward. Her fingers caught the steel edge of the ventilation grate. With a sharp twist, she popped the metal cover free and scrambled inside just as the white vapor began swirling across the bathroom floor, dissolving the edges of the shattered glass in a corrosive hiss.

"Hand me your arm!" Martha called down, leaning halfway out of the duct.

Damian leaped, catching the edge of the opening with one hand while Martha grabbed his wrist, hauling him upward just as the gas flooded the lower half of the room. They pulled the grate back into place, sealing themselves inside the narrow, dark metal shaft as the toxic air filled the bathroom below.

Coughing from the residual fumes that leaked through the seams, Damian pulled out his encrypted satellite phone. The screen flickered in the dark.

"Victor didn't just clear the north grounds," Damian whispered, his voice dangerously cold. "The sniper didn't act alone, and Victor knew about the gas deployment schedule. That means the inner circle is compromised."

Martha wiped soot and blood from her forehead, her heart pounding against her ribs. Her brother’s voice on the audio recording echoed in her mind: Do not give the card to Victor... Someone inside the house has to finish the job.

"My brother knew," Martha said quietly in the dark. "He knew someone high up in your organization was selling you out."

Damian looked at her, his expression hardening into absolute resolve. "Then we're going to find out who's holding the leash."
