Chapter 2 - Navigating the ShadowsThe ventilation shaft network of the Falcone estate was vast, designed decades earlier as an escape route for the family during turf wars. Crawling through the tight metal corridors in the dark, Martha kept her focus entirely on survival, though every muscle in her body ached from the glass cut near her shoulder.

Damian led the way, moving with silent, predatory precision. They navigated past the guest wings and the grand staircase until they reached the service drop behind the main library—a room that sat directly adjacent to Victor Renzi’s private office.

Damian pressed his ear against the thin metal grate overlooking the library.

Soft footsteps echoed below.

"The gas was supposed to finish both of them," a familiar, raspy voice muttered.

Martha’s blood ran cold. It was Victor Renzi.

"The sniper missed the first shot because the maid moved too fast," a second voice replied. This one was smoother, laced with corporate calculation.

Damian’s jaw tightened. He recognized that second voice immediately. It was Julian Vance, the family's chief legal counsel—the very man who handled all of their high-level financial transactions.

"It doesn't matter," Victor continued downstairs. "The estate is locked down under my direct command. Once the security sweep confirms they're dead from the gas, we report it as a tragic security breach. The board will vote to restructure leadership within forty-eight hours, and the New York syndicate takes over the shipping ports."

"And the memory card?" Julian asked.

"Andrew Bellini didn't give it to Damian before he went into the river," Victor laughed darkly. "It's burned up in the bathroom by now."

Inside the duct, Damian looked down at Martha. His hand rested safely in his inner pocket, where the small microchip containing Andrew Bellini's final confession and financial ledger was safely secured.

Martha’s eyes flashed with a mixture of grief and pure fury. Her brother hadn't just been murdered; he had been framed by the very men pretending to protect him, all to facilitate a corporate hostile takeover of the Falcone empire.

Damian gently touched her shoulder, signaling her to stay silent, before sliding open the grate above the library's dark corner.
