Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of GreedAdrian stood frozen in the center of the room, his jaw slack, his hands trembling at his sides. The smug smile that had defined his entrance was completely obliterated, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated panic.

"No," Adrian breathed, backing away from the bed as if my baby were radioactive. "No, this is a setup. Donald, tell him this is bullshit! My grandfather’s trust was settled five years ago!"
Donald, the high-priced corporate attorney, was frantically scrolling through his tablet, his face turning an unhealthy shade of gray.
"Adrian..." Donald stammered, his voice dropping into a panicked whisper. "The doctor is right. Article Nine of the Arthur Brooks Master Trust was sealed under a court-ordered medical protective order. It was designed to auto-trigger upon the birth of a confirmed genetic heir. If this child has the marker..."
"I don't care about a damn birthmark!" Adrian shouted, losing his composure entirely. He lunged toward my bed, reaching out his hand as if to grab the legal documents back. "She's an unfaithful, penniless bitch! She signed away her rights when—"
"Touch her, Mr. Brooks, and my security officers will throw you out of this hospital in handcuffs," Dr. Vance warned sharply.
Two heavy-set hospital security guards stepped into the room, their hands resting on their belts, their eyes locked on Adrian.
I leaned back against my pillows, holding my sleeping son safely against my chest. The exhaustion that had weighed down my limbs just moments ago was replaced by a surging, icy clarity. I looked at the man who had abandoned me when I needed him most, the man who had forced me to scrub floors while pregnant just to survive.
"You thought I was powerless, Adrian," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the quiet room. "You thought that by taking away my bank accounts and spreading lies about my character, I would just crawl into a corner and give up."
"Clara, listen to me," Adrian pleaded, his tone instantly shifting into a desperate, oily warmth as he tried to regain control. "We can talk about this! We're still legally married! Whatever happened between us... it was just a misunderstanding! My mother was pushing me, the business was under stress—"
"Save it," I interrupted coldly.
I reached into the hospital bedside drawer and pulled out a small, encrypted thumb drive I had kept in my purse throughout my labor. I held it up between my fingers.
"Do you know what this is, Adrian?"
Adrian blinked, his eyes darting to the black metallic drive. "What is that?"
"Before I met you, I spent six years working as a senior forensic auditor for the State Financial Crimes Division," I said, a slow, dangerous smile touching my lips. "Did you really think I forgot how to trace money just because I married you?"
Adrian’s breath caught in his throat.
"Every shell company you and your mother created in the Cayman Islands," I continued smoothly, "every fake invoice you funneled through Brooks Logistics to hide corporate debt, every deleted email where Evelyn instructed you to freeze my health insurance and force me into surrender—it's all on this drive. Fully backed up. Fully verified."
Donald gasped, looking at Adrian with total horror. "Adrian... what did you do?"
"I didn't just survive the last three months, Adrian," I said, my gaze locking onto his terrified eyes. "I spent every break while scrubbing office buildings downloading your financial records from the cloud back-ups you forgot were linked to our old joint server. You thought you were destroying my life. In reality, you were giving me every single piece of evidence I needed to put you and your mother in federal prison."
At that moment, the door pushed open once more.
Evelyn Brooks swept into the room, dressed in a crimson Chanel suit, her diamond necklace glittering under the lights. She looked around the room with immediate disgust, her eyes landing on me.
"Adrian, what is taking so long?" Evelyn demanded, her shrill voice grating on every nerve in the room. "Did she sign the papers or not? We have a press conference scheduled in an hour to announce your engagement to Lord Sterling's daughter!"
Adrian turned to his mother, his face utterly lifeless. "Mother... stop talking."
"What do you mean 'stop talking'?" Evelyn snapped, marching over to the bed. "Clara, hand over the baby and sign the document. You've played the victim long enough. You don't belong in our world."
"Mrs. Brooks," Dr. Vance said, stepping forward with a cold, formal bow. "I suggest you retain a criminal defense attorney immediately. As of ten minutes ago, your grandson has inherited control of Arthur Brooks' controlling stake in the company. And your former daughter-in-law has just authorized a full forensic audit of the entire Brooks estate."
Evelyn’s aristocratic composure shattered instantly. She looked from Dr. Vance to the baby, then to her son’s pale, trembling face.

"What... what did he say?" Evelyn whispered, clutching her pearl necklace.
"It's over, Evelyn," I said, holding my son close as he let out a soft, sweet sigh in his sleep. "Welcome to the beginning of your nightmare."
