Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of AdrianWith Evelyn sitting in a county jail cell awaiting trial without bail, the entire house of cards built by the Brooks family began to collapse at staggering speed.

One month later, I sat in the glass-walled visitor conference room of the Federal Detention Center.
Across the steel table sat Adrian Brooks.
He was unrecognizable. The tailored navy suits and polished leather shoes were gone, replaced by a drab orange inmate jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his jaw unshaven, and his eyes carried the hollow, desperate gaze of a man who had lost everything.
He looked at me through the reinforced glass, his hands trembling in their heavy wrist cuffs.
"Clara..." Adrian whispered through the intercom speaker. "Thank you for coming."
I sat quietly, my posture straight, my hands resting comfortably in my lap. I didn't say a word. I simply let the heavy silence hang between us, forcing him to confront the magnitude of his own ruin.
"The federal prosecutors offered me a plea deal," Adrian stammered, tears welling up in his eyes. "Twenty years... Clara, they want to give me twenty years for the pension fund embezzlement and tax fraud. My lawyers said if you testify on my behalf... if you write a letter asking for leniency... the judge might reduce it to eight."
He pressed his hands against the glass, begging like a child.
"Please, Clara! I know I was a terrible husband! I know I listened to my mother too much! But I'm Ethan's father! You can't let his father rot in prison for two decades! Think about what people will say to him when he grows up!"
I picked up the intercom receiver, my voice calm, even, and entirely devoid of emotion.
"When Ethan grows up, Adrian," I said, "I will tell him the exact truth. I will tell him that his mother was abandoned, penniless, and forced to work three jobs to keep him alive. And I will tell him that when his father tried to destroy us out of pure greed, justice stepped in."
"Clara, please!" Adrian sobbed, banging his forehead lightly against the glass. "I have nothing left! The bank seized the mansion! The cars are gone! The board revoked all my stock options! I'm completely broke!"
"You aren't broke because of bad luck, Adrian," I corrected smoothly. "You're broke because you were a thief. You stole from your company, you stole from your wife, and you tried to steal my child."
I reached into my bag and pulled out one final document, pressing it against the glass so he could read the bold header at the top:
PETITION FOR TOTAL TERMINATION OF PARENTAL RIGHTS AND LEGAL NAME CHANGE.
Adrian’s eyes scanned the page, his face growing paler with every word.
"You're... you're changing his name?" Adrian whispered.
"His name is Ethan Vance," I stated with absolute finality. "He will never carry the Brooks name, nor will he ever know the toxicity of your legacy. You will have no visitation, no parental rights, and no contact with him for the rest of your life."
"You can't do this to me!" Adrian screamed, slamming his fists against the partition. "I'm a Brooks!"
"You're a convict, Adrian," I replied softly.
I stood up, adjusting my coat. I hung up the intercom receiver, leaving his desperate screams muffled behind the double-paned glass.

As I walked out of the visitor center into the bright afternoon sunlight, I took a deep, clear breath of fresh air. The man who had walked into my delivery room three months ago thinking he had destroyed my life was now locked in a cage of his own making.
The past was finally dead. The future was ours.
