Chapter 1 - The Shadows of Lomas de Chapultepec

The silence in the opulent master bathroom of the Lomas de Chapultepec mansion was suffocating, broken only by the quiet, ragged breathing of Doña Teresa and the soft whimpers of eight-month-old Mateo and Bruno. Outside, the rain beat a steady rhythm against the double-paned floor-to-ceiling windows, contrasting sharply with the cold, sterile reality inside.

Adrián Beltrán held the phone to his ear, his knuckles white around the device. Across the marble threshold, his wife, Lorena, stood frozen, her designer ivory jumpsuit pristine, yet her face drained of all color.

"Say that again," Adrián commanded into the speaker, his voice dropping into a register so dangerously low it made the security chief on the other end pause.

"Mr. Beltrán," Chief Security Officer Carlos Vargas repeated, his tone grave. "We ran a deep forensic recovery on the cloud server for the property’s interior camera system. Someone paid our night technician fifty thousand pesos three months ago to selectively wipe local storage logs every night at midnight. But the automatic off-site backup system caught everything."

Adrián took a slow, deliberate breath, steadying his mother against his knee as he held both infants against his chest. "Who was helping her, Carlos?"

"It’s your cousin, Esteban," Vargas disclosed. "Esteban Beltrán. He’s been entering the property through the service gate three times a week using a revoked master key. The hidden camera in the secondary study shows him meeting with your wife. And Mr. Beltrán... the physical logs show he was present in the house during the times Doña Teresa sustained her injuries."

The name hit Adrián like a physical blow.

Esteban was the son of his late father’s younger brother. When Adrián launched the Beltrán Hospitality Group, building it from a single boutique hotel into an empire valued at hundreds of millions of pesos, he had brought Esteban along, granting him the position of Chief Financial Officer. He had trusted Esteban with the company’s treasury, its expansion contracts, and its legal representation.

"Where is Esteban right now?" Adrián asked.

"He just pulled into the subterranean garage in his sedan, sir," Vargas replied. "He thinks you’re on a private jet to Monterrey."

"Lock the security gates," Adrián ordered calmly. "Deploy four guards to the main entrance of the house. No one enters, no one leaves. If either Lorena or Esteban tries to step toward a vehicle, detain them physically."

Adrián ended the call and slipped his phone into his pocket. He looked down at his mother. The purple and yellow bruising along her ribcage was visible where her soaked cotton blouse had shifted. The smell of harsh industrial bleach clung to her skin—skin that had once comforted him through feverish childhood nights in their tiny one-room apartment in Tepito.

"Adrián..." Lorena began, her voice pitching up in a desperate bid for composure as she took a step toward him, her high heels clicking loudly against the wet tile. "Listen to me! Esteban and I were only trying to manage the household! Your mother has severe dementia! She’s been hallucinating, throwing things, hurting herself! We had to keep her occupied so she wouldn't wander into the street!"

Adrián didn't shout. He didn't raise his hand. He simply looked at her with an absolute, terrifying absence of warmth.

"You mentioned her cane earlier," Adrián said quietly. "Where is it, Lorena?"

Lorena swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the hallway. "I told you, she lost it—"

"Teresa," Adrián whispered, kneeling back down so his eyes were level with his mother's. "Where is your cane, Mom?"

Doña Teresa trembled violently, her red, chemically burned fingers clutching the fabric of Adrián’s trousers. Tears rolled down the deep lines of her weathered face, trailing into the collar of her shirt.

"Under... under the utility sink in the basement," she sobbed, her voice barely audible. "She... she locked it in the cabinet so I couldn't walk without holding onto the walls. She said... if I couldn't work for my keep, I didn't deserve to sit at the table."

Lorena took two quick steps back, turning toward the bedroom door, but the tall figure of Carlos Vargas blocked the frame, accompanied by two armed security guards in dark suits.

"Mr. Beltrán," Vargas said smoothly, holding out a sleek black tablet. "We have the restored footage queued up on the monitor in your primary office."

"Take my mother and my sons to the guest suite on the third floor," Adrián instructed Vargas, handing the twins gently to the lead guard, who took them with practiced care. "Call Dr. Mendoza immediately. I want a full medical evaluation, a forensic photographic log of every mark on my mother's body, and a blood panel done within the hour."

"Adrián, please!" Lorena shrieked as a guard stepped between her and the door. "You can't treat me like a criminal in my own home! I am your wife! I am the mother of your children!"

"You are a guest in a house paid for by the woman you forced onto her knees," Adrián replied coldly, turning his back on her. "And your stay has just ended."
