Chapter 2 - The Audit of Betrayal

The executive study on the main floor of the Beltrán estate was lined with dark mahogany and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, reflecting the success of a man who had built an empire from absolute poverty.
Adrián sat behind the wide desk, staring at the high-definition monitor. Standing in front of the desk, flanked by two security personnel, were Lorena and Esteban Beltrán.
Esteban, thirty-four, dressed in a tailored navy suit, was sweating profusely despite the air conditioning. His hands were clasped tightly in front of him, his eyes darting toward the heavy wooden door every few seconds.
"You brought him into my house while I was traveling," Adrián said, his tone devoid of emotion as he tapped the space bar on his keyboard.
The video played on the screen.
The timestamp showed three weeks prior, at 2:15 PM. The footage captured the kitchen of the mansion. Doña Teresa was attempting to pour herself a glass of water from the dispenser. Esteban entered the frame, grabbed her by the arm, and shoved her roughly against the marble counter, snatching a set of documents from her hands. Lorena stood nearby, holding a coffee cup, watching without a single gesture of intervention.
"She was reading financial statements she found in your briefcase!" Esteban blurted out, his voice cracking with desperation. "Adrián, you don't understand! She was meddling in company business! She was going through tax filings!"
"She can barely read past a primary school level, Esteban," Adrián said, his eyes fixing on his cousin with lethal precision. "She was looking at pictures of our new resort project in Los Cabos because she was proud of us. Why were tax filings for Beltrán Hospitality sitting on my kitchen counter in the middle of the afternoon?"
Esteban fell silent.
Adrián clicked another file. This time, an audio recording captured by an overhead microphone in the study played through the room’s high-fidelity speakers.
“If he signs the restructure before Friday, the offshore holding company in Panama receives twenty percent of the equity automatically,” Esteban’s voice echoed clearly in the room. “Adrián trusts me implicitly. He thinks it’s a standard tax shelter for the expansion.”
“And what about the old woman?” Lorena’s voice answered clearly on the tape. “She notices everything. She saw the wire transfers on my laptop yesterday.”
“Keep her isolated,” Esteban’s recorded voice replied chillingly. “Break her spirit. Make her look completely unhinged so if she ever tries to tell Adrián anything, he’ll think it’s advanced onset dementia. Deprive her of her mobility aids. Keep her exhausted.”
The room fell into an agonizing silence when the audio ended.
Lorena collapsed into one of the leather armchairs, burying her face in her manicured hands, sobbing uncontrollably. "Adrián... Esteban promised me we would secure the twins' future! He told me you were overextending the business... that we were going to go bankrupt if we didn't divert funds!"
"You lied to her!" Esteban yelled, pointing an accusatory finger at Lorena. "She wanted the lifestyle! She wanted the house in San Diego and the yacht in Cancún! She complained every single day that your mother was an eyesore in this house! She’s the one who made her scrub the floors!"
"Enough," Adrián said quietly.
He picked up his desk phone and dialed a three-digit extension.
"Commander Orozco," Adrián spoke into the receiver. "This is Adrián Beltrán. I have two individuals detained at my residence for systematic physical abuse of an elderly dependent, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and grand larceny. My legal team has the evidentiary package ready for your detectives."
Esteban’s face turned gray. "Adrián... we're blood! Your father was my uncle! You can't send your own family to prison!"
"My father died when I was fourteen," Adrián said, standing up and leaning over the desk, his presence towering over his cousin. "My mother worked eighteen hours a day in a greasy kitchen to buy my school uniform. She lost her health so I could have a future. You aren't my family, Esteban. You are a parasite that crept into my home while I was looking the other way."

Within fifteen minutes, three marked vehicles from the Secretariat of Citizen Security arrived at the gates. Adrián stood on the front portico, holding his coat over his arm, watching as federal officers placed handcuffs on both Esteban Beltrán and Lorena.
Lorena screamed his name, begging for forgiveness, pleading for her children, as she was guided into the rear of the patrol car. Adrián did not blink, nor did he offer a single word of response. He watched until the red lights vanished down the tree-lined boulevard of Lomas de Chapultepec.
