Chapter 2 - The Ambush and Legal Warfare

At 8:30 AM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Apex Medical Dynamics shone brightly under the morning California sun. Employees walked through the lobby with coffee cups, chatting about quarterly distributions and upcoming medical device shipments. None of them knew that a war was about to erupt on the top floor.

I stepped out of the executive elevator wearing a sharp charcoal suit. My posture was rigid, my face unreadable. By my side was Arthur Pendelton, a veteran corporate litigator and former federal prosecutor whom I had hired at midnight. Behind us walked two private security personnel.

As I approached the main boardroom, I heard loud, booming laughter inside.

I pushed the heavy oak doors open.

Sitting at the head of the boardroom table—in my chair—was Mason. He was wearing an expensive designer suit, likely bought with the cash he had stolen from my safe. Sitting to his right, wearing a neck brace and holding a cane for theatrical effect, was my mother, Rosalind. Next to them sat Victor Vance (no relation), a sharp-nosed attorney known for representing corporate raiders.

Four members of my six-person board of directors were already seated, looking deeply uncomfortable and holding legal packets that had clearly just been handed to them.

"Ethan!" Mason called out, leaning back and lacing his fingers together behind his head. "I told you we’d discuss my new position today. Though, looking at you, I thought you'd be at home packing your bags."

Rosalind let out a faint, pathetic whimper, clutching her neck. "Look at him, gentlemen... he shoves his own mother down the stairs... he's lost his mind to that scheming woman he married..."

"Save the performance for the courtroom, Rosalind," I said, my voice dangerously calm as I took a seat at the far end of the table.

Victor Vance cleared his throat, sliding a stack of documents toward my side of the table. "Mr. Ethan Vance, as counsel for Mrs. Rosalind Vance and Mr. Mason Vance, I am advising you that your presence here is purely as a minority observer. We have presented the board with physical evidence—including original incorporation deeds and certified capital contribution records—proving that your mother provided 80% of the initial startup capital for Apex Medical Dynamics."

I looked at the documents. They had forged my signature on an ancient promissory note and modified the corporate registry, using the original paper documents they had stolen from my safe to re-register ownership filings with the state behind my back.

"This is a fraudulent filing," Arthur Pendelton interjected smoothly, leaning forward. "My client is the 100% sole founder and owner of Apex Medical Dynamics. These documents have been tampered with."

"Tampered?" Mason sneered, pulling out an iPad and tapping the screen. "We have the physical stock certificates right here, Arthur. Signed in ink twelve years ago. Furthermore, in light of Ethan's violent mental breakdown yesterday—which resulted in serious injuries to our mother—we have executed an emergency proxy vote under Section 4 of the original charter to remove Ethan as CEO to protect company stock value."

One of the board members, Marcus, looked up at me nervously. "Ethan... is this true? The news is already threatening to leak. If the press finds out our CEO beat his elderly mother while his wife is pregnant, our stock value will plunge fifty percent by noon."

"It's a complete fabrication, Marcus," I said, eyeing Mason. "They broke into my home safe three nights ago. They stole those documents, along with half a million dollars in gold and cash."

Mason burst out laughing. "A likely story! Broke into your safe? Do you have proof? Or are you just unraveling under the pressure of running a company you couldn't have built without Mom's money?"

Rosalind wiped away a nonexistent tear. "I gave him my life savings... and he turned into a monster. Mason is the only one who can save this company now."

I looked at Mason, then at my mother. The sheer arrogance on their faces was sickening. They truly believed they had executed the perfect crime. They believed that because I had loved them once, I was blind.

"You want proof, Mason?" I asked quietly.

I signaled to Arthur, who produced a sleek silver thumb drive and plugged it into the boardroom's central presentation system. The massive 4K display on the wall flickered to life.

Mason’s smirk wavered slightly, but he tried to maintain his composure. "What is this? More fake claims?"

The screen lit up with crystal-clear 4K video.

The timestamp showed July 25, 2:14 AM.

The board members gasped as the video showed Mason inside my study, using a thermal scanner to crack my safe code. The audio was pristine. Mason’s voice echoed through the boardroom speakers:

“He thinks he's the king of Silicon Valley... Tomorrow, Mom, you push the pregnant bitch until she breaks... Once he touches you, we file the assault report...”

The room went dead silent.

Mason’s face flushed red, then drained completely of color, turning a ghostly, sickly white. Rosalind froze, her hands trembling so badly she dropped her cane onto the floor with a loud clatter.

"That... that's an illegal recording!" lawyer Victor Vance stammered, frantically standing up. "This is inadmissible! It violates privacy rights!"

"It was recorded inside my client's private home, in a room housing sensitive corporate intelligence," Arthur Pendelton countered sharply. "It is completely legal under California security exceptions, and it has already been transmitted to the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office."

I stood up, resting my hands flat on the boardroom table, leaning toward my brother.

"You wanted to talk about your new position, Mason?" I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor. "Your new position is primary suspect in a federal corporate espionage, grand larceny, and conspiracy investigation. Security is on their way up. And you have exactly thirty seconds to get out of my building before I have you thrown out the window."
