Chapter 4 - The Strike Back

Armed with Daphne’s hidden ledger and the clear evidence of Julian Sterling’s involvement, Arthur Pendelton and I launched a devastating counter-offensive.

The next morning, we didn't just file criminal complaints; we executed a multi-front legal maneuver. Arthur filed an emergency RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) lawsuit in federal court, naming Mason Vance, Rosalind Vance, Julian Sterling, and Vanguard Health Systems as co-conspirators in an organized corporate theft and extortion enterprise.

Meanwhile, my private investigator tracked Mason to a luxury penthouse suite in downtown San Jose—a suit paid for directly by a shell corporation affiliated with Vanguard Health.

At 2:00 PM, while I was reviewing financial audit reports in my office, my phone buzzed with an alert from our corporate banking security portal.

Flagged Transaction: Attempted Wire Transfer of $12,000,000 from Apex Reserve Account to Overseas Account (Cayman Islands).

Mason was trying to drain our corporate reserves using the stolen corporate authorization keys he had managed to copy before being kicked out!

"He's panicking," Arthur said, looking at the screen. "He knows the federal court injunction will land by five o'clock today, so he's trying to steal whatever cash isn't nailed down and flee the country."

"Not on my watch," I said. "Freeze the transfer and notify the FBI Financial Crimes division. We have him trapped."

Just as I stood up to head to the district attorney's office, my personal phone rang. It was the hospital's head obstetrician.

"Mr. Vance!" the doctor's voice was urgent. "Your wife’s water just broke! The severe emotional stress from the past few days has triggered premature labor. You need to get here immediately!"

My heart hit my throat. "Is she okay? Is the baby okay?"

"Her blood pressure is spiking dangerously," the doctor replied. "We are prepping her for an emergency C-section right now!"

The world seemed to spin. On one side, my company's survival and the culmination of our legal trap against Mason and Sterling was reaching its absolute climax within the hour. On the other side, the woman who meant more to me than life itself was fighting for her life and our child's in a operating room.

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Arthur," I said, tossing him the master file containing Daphne's ledger, the video footage, and the banking fraud logs. "Handle the FBI and the emergency hearing. I'm going to my wife."

"Go, Ethan," Arthur said firmly. "I'll make sure they rot in prison."

I sprinted out of the building, tearing through the traffic of San Jose, praying with every beat of my heart that I wouldn't lose what truly mattered.

When I burst through the doors of the hospital's maternity ward, the red light above the operating room was glowing. I threw on medical scrubs, my hands shaking uncontrollably, and rushed into the surgical suite just as the doctors were preparing Daphne.

Daphne looked up through her sweat-slicked hair, her face pale, holding out her trembling hand. "Ethan... you came..."

"I will always come for you," I sobbed, dropping to my knees beside her head and gripping her hand with both of mine. "Nothing in this world matters except you and our baby. Forget the money, forget the company. Just stay with me."

"I'm scared, Ethan..."

"I know, my love. I'm right here. I'm never leaving your side again."

The monitors beeped rapidly as the surgeons worked frantically behind the sterile sheet. The tension in the room was suffocating. Every second felt like an eternity. I kissed Daphne's brow, whispering prayers, reminding her of the tiny apartment, the bean tacos, the dreams we had built together from nothing.

And then, at 4:12 PM, a sharp, loud, beautiful sound pierced through the sterile room.

A baby's cry.

"It's a girl!" the doctor announced, holding up a tiny, wriggling baby girl. "Healthy and breathing on her own!"

Tears spilled unchecked down my face as the nurses wrapped our daughter in a warm blanket and laid her against Daphne’s chest. Daphne wept tears of pure joy, cradling our daughter gently.

"She's beautiful, Ethan," Daphne whispered softly. "What should we name her?"

"Hope," I said, staring at the miracle before us. "Her name is Hope."

At that exact moment, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out silently. It was a text message from Arthur Pendelton:

“Mason and Rosalind were just arrested by federal agents at San Jose International Airport trying to board a private flight to Belize with $500,000 in cash and stolen gold. Julian Sterling has been served with a federal subpoena. It's over. You won.”

I looked down at my wife and daughter, feeling a deep, unshakeable peace wash over me. The battle was won, but the true victory was right here in my arms.
