Chapter 5 - The Climax and Final Reckoning

Three days later, the formal arraignment hearing took place at the Santa Clara County Courthouse.
Though Daphne was still recovering comfortably in a private suite with little Hope, I attended the court session in person. I wanted to look my tormentors in the eye when justice was delivered.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate observers, and local news crews. The scandal of Vanguard Health's illegal attempt to raid Apex Medical Dynamics using a fractured family dynamic had rocked Silicon Valley.
At 10:00 AM, the side doors opened.
Mason and Rosalind were led inside by armed bailiffs.
They looked broken. Mason was dressed in a orange county jail jumpsuit, his wrists handcuffed to his waist belt, his arrogant swagger completely shattered. Rosalind wore the same orange uniform, her hands cussed, her hair unkempt, stripped of all her fine clothes, jewelry, and pretension.
When Rosalind saw me sitting in the front row, a look of desperate, pathetic hope flashed across her face.
"Ethan!" she cried out, her voice cracking as the bailiffs forced her into the defense seat. "Ethan, my son! Tell them it's a mistake! Tell them to let me go! I'm your mother!"
I stared at her with complete, stone-cold indifference. I said nothing.
Judge Sarah Jenkins took the bench and slammed her gavel down, restoring absolute order in the courtroom.
"We are here for the formal bond hearing and plea entry regarding Case No. 2026-CR-88412: The People vs. Mason Vance and Rosalind Vance," Judge Jenkins announced, her eyes glaring sternly over her glasses at the defense table.
The federal prosecutor stood up. "Your Honor, the state presents irrefutable evidence of a grand conspiracy including corporate espionage, physical assault resulting in severe bodily injury to a pregnant woman, grand larceny exceeding $500,000, and attempted international flight to evade prosecution."
Mason’s public defender attempted to speak. "Your Honor, my clients were operating under a domestic dispute regarding family business ownership—"
"Silence, counsel," Judge Jenkins snapped. "I have reviewed the audio and video surveillance evidence provided by the prosecution. I have also reviewed the notarized financial records proving that Mrs. Rosalind Vance lied under oath regarding her initial investments. The depth of malice and premeditated cruelty displayed in these recordings is utterly appalling."
Judge Jenkins turned her gaze directly to Rosalind and Mason.
"Rosalind Vance, you physically assaulted an eight-month-pregnant woman and conspired to rob your own child. Mason Vance, you engaged in illegal wire fraud, burglary, and corporate sabotage. You are both a flight risk and a danger to society."
"Your Honor, please!" Rosalind wailed, bursting into loud, hysterical tears, clutching the defense table. "I'm an old woman! Ethan, tell her! I raised you! I gave you life!"
I slowly stood up from the gallery. The judge looked at me and nodded, allowing me to speak as the primary victim.
I walked up to the podium, looking directly at the woman who had brought me into the world, and the brother who had tried to destroy it.
"You gave me life, Rosalind," I said, my voice echoing clearly throughout the courtroom. "And for thirty-six years, I respected that. I gave you a home, I gave you comfort, I gave you my unconditional love. But true family doesn't demand humiliation in exchange for affection. True family doesn't kick a pregnant woman onto the floor. You chose greed over love. You chose money over your own grandchild."
I turned to Mason. "And you, Mason... you spent your whole life blaming me for your own failures, claiming I got lucky. You tried to steal what Daphne and I built with our blood, sweat, and tears. Now you can spend the next decade reflecting on what you've earned."
I looked back at the judge. "Your Honor, I ask for the maximum penalties under the law. No leniency. No bail."
"Ethan! No! You monster! I am your mother!" Rosalind screamed, her face twisting into a mask of pure, hideous rage as the bailiffs grabbed her arms. "You'll burn in hell for this! You hear me? You'll burn in hell!"
"Bail is denied for both defendants," Judge Jenkins declared, slamming her gavel down with a thunderous strike. "Defendants will remain in custody pending trial."

As the bailiffs dragged Mason and Rosalind out of the courtroom, kicking and screaming, the media cameras flashed rapidly. Julian Sterling’s career was already in ruins—Vanguard Health’s board of directors had fired him hours earlier to mitigate their own legal liability, leaving him facing massive federal civil and criminal suits.
I turned my back on my former mother and brother as they were led away into the dark corridors of the penal system, feeling the heavy burden that I had carried for thirty-six years finally lift from my shoulders.
