Chapter 2 - The Titan Rises

The entire room froze. Hunter’s grip tightened on my wrist for a fraction of a second before his head snapped toward the back of the auditorium. Barbara turned, her smug smile faltering into a look of sheer annoyance.
From the shadows of the top tier, a man stood up. He was tall, dressed in a impeccably tailored charcoal suit, with silver hair swept back from a face that carried the weight of absolute authority. He held a leather portfolio under his arm, and as he stepped down the carpeted stairs into the light of the presentation hall, the entire atmosphere of the room shifted.
It was my father, Dr. Julian Sterling.
To Hunter and Barbara, he had always just been "Julian," a quiet, retired businessman who lived comfortably in Chicago. When Hunter and I got married five years ago, I had insisted on keeping my family life entirely separate from my academic pursuits. I wanted to earn my PhD on my own merits, without the shadow of my family name influencing a single grade. Because of that, I had never told Hunter—and certainly never told his elitist mother—the true extent of my father’s legacy.
They didn't know that Julian Sterling wasn't just a retired businessman. He was a legendary legal scholar, a former federal judge, and, most importantly to this exact room, the primary benefactor whose multi-million dollar endowment funded the entire graduate school of this university. The very building we were standing in was named after his grandfather.
"Who do you think you are to interfere in a family matter?" Barbara hissed, her voice losing its polished veneer. "This is between my son and his unstable wife. Sir, you have no place—"
"Quiet, Barbara," my father said. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying, chilling calm that sliced through her words like a scalpel.
Hunter blinked, his face flushing crimson as he looked at my father. "Julian? What are you doing here? Look, I know you love Clara, but you don't know what happened last night. She lost her mind. She took kitchen shears to her own head. She's dangerous to herself. We're trying to save her."
My father reached the bottom of the stairs and walked directly past Hunter, placing himself firmly between my abusers and me. He looked down at my jagged hair, his eyes softening with a profound, aching sorrow, before hardening into blocks of pure ice as he turned back to face my husband.
"Do you take me for a fool, Hunter?" my father asked softly.
"Julian, please—"
"Dr. Harrison," my father interrupted, turning his attention to my advisor, who was now standing completely rigid, his mouth slightly open. "I believe you recognize me."
"Chancellor Sterling," Dr. Harrison stammered, adjusting his glasses hastily. "I... yes, of course. We had no idea you were attending today's defense."
Hunter’s eyes widened at the word Chancellor. He looked at Barbara, whose pale face suddenly drained of all remaining color.
"I am here as a witness," my father announced, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the auditorium. "And I am here to present evidence. Because unlike my daughter, who has spent the last eight years quietly working to earn her title without relying on her family's name, I have no such reservations about using my power to crush those who seek to destroy her."
My father opened his leather portfolio. He pulled out a high-resolution, color photograph and laid it flat on the committee’s table.
"Last night, at precisely 11:42 PM, I received an automated alert from the smart-home security system I secretly installed in my daughter’s apartment as a wedding gift—a system Hunter forgot even existed," my father stated calmly. "The system records video logs of the common areas in the event of high-decibel distress signals."
He turned another page. "This is a still frame from the kitchen camera. It clearly shows Hunter holding Clara by the throat against the counter, while Barbara holds a pair of heavy-duty kitchen shears, severing her hair while my daughter screams for help."
A collective gasp echoed from the committee. Dr. Reyes slammed her pen down on the table, her eyes flashing with righteous fury. "My God," she whispered.
Hunter stumbled backward, his hands flying to his sides. "That... that's a violation of privacy! That's not what it looks like! We were trying to restrain her, she was hysterical—"
"The audio log has already been transmitted to the Madison Police Department, along with a formal filing for felony domestic assault, battery, and false imprisonment," my father continued, his voice unwavering, absolute, and devastating. "The police cruisers are currently waiting at the main entrance of this building. I suggested they wait outside only so that my daughter could complete her defense without the undignified distraction of your handcuffs clicking in her presentation hall."

Barbara’s chest heaved as she clutched her designer purse to her chest. "You can't do this! We are respectable people! Hunter is up for a senior partnership at his firm next week! This will ruin him!"
"Ruin him?" My father smiled, a cold, humorless expression that made Hunter flinch. "Barbara, you haven't even begun to see what ruin looks like. I am just getting started."
