Chapter 4 - The Handcuffs Click

I stepped out into the hallway, my father walking closely by my side. The moment the heavy oak doors shut behind us, the adrenaline that had kept me upright began to fade, and my knees buckled. My father caught me in his arms, holding me tight against his chest.
"I've got you, Clara," he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I've got you. You were magnificent. Absolutely magnificent."
"Thank you, Dad," I sobbed into his shoulder, finally letting the tears fall. "They tried to take everything from me."
"They took nothing," he said fiercely, pulling back to look at me. "They only exposed their own weakness. And now, it's time for the bill to come due."
The double doors of the auditorium opened again. Hunter and Barbara were marched out by the campus security officers. Walking up the stairs from the main entrance were three uniform Madison police officers and a plainclothes detective.
Hunter saw the police and panicked. "Clara! Please! Tell them to stop this! It was a domestic dispute, it got out of hand, I'm sorry! You can't let them arrest me—my career will be over!"
"Your career was over the moment you laid a hand on my daughter," my father said, his voice dropping like an anvil.
The detective stepped forward, looking at the photographs my father had provided, then at my face and my butchered hair. "Hunter Vance? Barbara Vance?"
"This is an outrage!" Barbara shrieked, her voice echoing down the marble hallway, drawing the attention of dozens of students who had gathered to watch the drama unfold. "Do you know who we are? My husband is a prominent attorney in Ohio! You cannot arrest us based on the lies of this hysterical girl!"
"Ma'am, we have the video and audio evidence," the detective said coldly. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
The sound of the metal handcuffs clicking open was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard. Hunter wept openly as his wrists were bound behind him. The arrogant, controlling man who had pinned me to a kitchen counter twelve hours ago was now reduced to a sniveling child, begging for mercy that would never come.
Barbara was cuffed next, her expensive trench coat wrinkling under the firm grip of the officer. As they were led down the hallway, surrounded by a crowd of whispering, recording students, I felt a massive, suffocating weight lift off my chest.
Just as they reached the elevators, the door to the presentation hall reopened. Dr. Harrison, Dr. Vance, and Dr. Reyes stepped out into the corridor. The entire hallway went silent as the committee approached us.
Dr. Harrison carried a gold-embossed leather folder. He looked at me, completely ignoring the scene at the elevators.
"Clara," he said, a proud smile breaking across his face. "It is the unanimous decision of this committee that your research is not only passing, but it has been awarded the highest distinction of Summa Cum Laude. You didn't just defend your dissertation, Clara. You redefined it."

He extended his hand. "Congratulations, Dr. Sterling."
Hearing my maiden name, my true name, paired with the title I had fought so hard for, caused a fresh wave of tears to spill over my eyes. I shook his hand, feeling the solid, unbreakable reality of my new life.
