Chapter 5 - The Dismantling

The weeks following my defense were a whirlwind of legal firestorms and corporate destruction. My father had unleashed the full, terrifying might of his legal and financial network.
Hunter’s dream of becoming a senior partner at his high-end firm evaporated within forty-eight hours. The firm, having received a courtesy copy of the police report and the video evidence directly from my father’s legal team, terminated Hunter’s employment immediately, citing a violation of their morality clause. They didn't just fire him; they put out a public press release condemning domestic violence, ensuring that his name was permanently toxic in the corporate world.
But my father wasn't done. He discovered that Hunter had been secretly skimming money from our joint savings account to help pay off his mother's massive, hidden gambling debts in Ohio—the real reason Barbara had been so desperate to keep me under their thumb and dependent on them.
Armed with this information, my divorce attorney, a ruthless woman who specialized in high-asset asset protection, dismantled Hunter in the family court. Because of the felony assault charges and the financial fraud, the judge awarded me the entirety of our joint assets, our apartment, and ordered Hunter to pay massive legal fees.
Hunter’s father, a prominent Ohio attorney, tried to use his influence to get the criminal charges dropped. But he quickly realized he was playing in a completely different league. My father arranged for the story to be picked up by major legal publications. The headline “Prominent Ohio Legal Family Involved in Brutal Domestic Assault of Award-Winning Scholar” ruined their family firm within a month.
Barbara pleaded guilty to felony assault to avoid prison time, receiving five years of strict probation, a massive fine, and permanent court-ordered psychiatric evaluation. Her precious social standing in her country club community was entirely demolished. She became a pariah, unable to step outside her home without facing the judgmental stares of the neighbors she had spent a lifetime trying to impress.
Hunter, facing the full brunt of the domestic battery charges and the video evidence, was sentenced to two years in a state correctional facility. The man who tried to lock me inside a house was now locked inside a cell.

During all of this, I focused on healing. I rented a beautiful, light-filled apartment overlooking Lake Mendota. I spent my afternoons sitting by the water, reading, writing, and watching my hair grow back. It was no longer a jagged mess; a high-end stylist in Chicago—a friend of my father's—had transformed the ruined locks into a chic, asymmetrical cut that made me look fierce, modern, and utterly transformed.
I was no longer the timid woman trying to keep the peace in a toxic marriage. I was a survivor, a victor, and a doctor.
