Chapter 3 - The Gathering StormThe warehouse district of Red Hook, Brooklyn, was silent except for the rhythmic sloshing of dark water against the wooden piers.

Inside a sprawling, dimly lit concrete facility, heavy iron doors were locked from the inside. Armed men stood every ten paces along the catwalks, their hands resting on submachine guns. In the center of the room, illuminated by a single overhead industrial lamp, was a large round table.
Sitting around the table were the heads of New York's major crime syndicates.
At the head of the confrontation stood Mateo Valetti—a gaunt, silver-haired man in his late sixties with small, rat-like eyes and a reputation for sadistic cruelty. Beside him sat two of his top lieutenants.
The heavy doors at the far end of the warehouse ground open.
Gabriel Moretti walked in alone, accompanied only by Marco DeLuca. Gabriel didn't carry a weapon. He didn't look at the armed guards on the catwalks. He walked with the relaxed, effortless authority of an apex predator walking into a room full of jackals.
He pulled out a heavy steel chair across from Mateo and sat down, resting his elbows on the table.
"You called a meeting, Mateo," Gabriel said, his voice smooth and cold. "Make it quick. I have places to be."
Mateo leaned forward, his yellowed teeth baring in a grotesque sneer. "You’ve grown arrogant, Moretti. Ever since your wife died, you think you can run this city like your personal playground. You've got armed units driving through Queens without our permission. You're interfering with our logistics routes."
"My units are in Queens to protect my interests," Gabriel replied calmly, adjusting his cuff links.
"Interests?" Mateo laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "You mean that fat factory worker? The one who pulled your brat out of the crash?"
The air in the warehouse instantly turned to liquid nitrogen.
Marco DeLuca’s hand twitched toward his shoulder holster, but Gabriel raised one single finger, stopping his security director in his tracks.
Gabriel leaned forward, bringing his face into the bright light of the overhead lamp. His eyes were so dark, so devoid of human warmth, that Mateo’s laughter died instantly in his throat.
"Say her name again, Mateo," Gabriel whispered. His voice wasn't loud, but it echoed off the cold concrete walls with terrifying clarity. "Say one more word about her, or about my daughter, and I will tear your organization apart until there isn't enough left of you to bury in the Meadowlands."
Mateo tried to hold his ground, but a cold sweat broke out along his collar. "She's a civilian, Moretti! She’s nobody! But she's your weak spot now, isn't she? Everyone in this room knows it. The great Gabriel Moretti has a soft heart for a poor girl from the packing plant!"
Gabriel stood up slowly.
He didn't draw a gun. He simply reached into his jacket, pulled out a heavy black leather ledger, and tossed it onto the center of the table. It landed with a loud CRACK that made two of the mob bosses jump.
"That ledger contains every offshore account, every bribe payment, and every hidden narcotics route the Valetti family has used in the last five years," Gabriel said smoothly. "If anything happens to Emma Brooks—if she slips on ice, if her car breaks down, if a single hair on her head is harmed—that ledger goes directly to the United States Attorney’s Office and the FBI."
Mateo’s face drained of all color. "Where... where did you get that?"
"I am Gabriel Moretti," Gabriel said, stepping away from the table. "I know everything. I own everything. Touch her, Mateo, and you won't just die—you will watch everything you built dissolve into federal prison sentences before you draw your last breath."
Gabriel turned his back on the room full of armed mobsters and walked casually toward the exit, Marco following a step behind.
No one dared to draw a weapon. No one dared to speak.
Outside, in the cool night air of the docks, Marco let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding for an hour. "Boss... that ledger was a bluff, wasn't it? We only have half those account numbers."
Gabriel stepped into the back of his car, his face dark and unreadable. "Mateo doesn't know that. But he will be desperate now, Marco. Cornered rats don't think logically. They attack."

Gabriel pulled out his phone and dialed Dr. Vance’s private line.
"Dr. Vance," Gabriel said urgently. "Initiate secondary security protocols at the hospital immediately. I want a full team on Miss Brooks's mother’s floor. And find out where Emma is right now."
