Chapter 4 - The Ambush in the DarkEmma was sitting on a wooden bench inside a small, quiet coffee shop two blocks from her apartment in Queens.

It was eight o'clock in the evening. The rain had returned, tapping rhythmically against the glass windows. In front of her sat a notebook where she had been writing down recipe ideas—old cinnamon roll formulations from her bankrupt bakery that she hadn't thought about in years.
For the first time in months, her mind felt clear. Her mother was safe in a world-class facility, receiving care that Emma could never have provided on her factory salary. The heavy weight that had been crushing her chest for two years seemed to have lifted slightly.
She took a sip of warm tea and looked at her phone.
There was a text message from an unknown number:
Miss Brooks, this is Marco DeLuca. Please remain inside the coffee shop. Do not exit onto the street. We are sending a vehicle to pick you up immediately.
Emma frowned, setting her cup down. What was happening? Was her mother okay?
Before she could type a reply, the front door of the coffee shop burst open.
Two men wearing heavy dark jackets and rain caps stepped inside. The bell above the door chimed loudly. The barista behind the counter looked up, about to greet them, but froze when he saw the heavy suppressed pistols tucked against their jackets.
Emma’s heart slammed into her throat.
One of the men—a tall, scarred thug with yellowed teeth—scanned the small shop, his eyes locking onto Emma sitting in the corner booth.
"Emma Brooks?" the man grunted, stepping toward her table, pulling his gun from his coat. "You’re coming with us, lady. Don't make a scene and nobody gets hurt."
Emma’s mind raced. Panic screamed through her veins, but years of surviving hardship, managing a high-stress kitchen, and pulling a child from a burning car took over.
"I'm not going anywhere with you," Emma said, her voice remarkably clear despite her trembling hands.
"You don't get a choice," the man sneered, reaching out with a leather-gloved hand to grab her collar.
Emma didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy ceramic teapot filled with boiling water from her table and slammed it directly into the man’s face.
The boiling tea exploded across his cheeks. The man shrieked in agony, dropping his weapon and clutching his face as he staggered backward.
The second thug swore loudly, raising his gun to point it directly at Emma’s chest.
THUD!
The heavy glass window of the coffee shop shattered inward as a dark figure crashed through the frame.
Marco DeLuca hit the floor, rolled instantly, and fired two silenced rounds from his sidearm before the second thug could even pull his trigger. The thug collapsed to the floor, motionless.
Marco sprang to his feet, grabbed the screaming, burned man by the neck, and knocked him unconscious with a single, precise blow from the butt of his pistol.
The coffee shop went dead silent, save for the sound of rain pouring through the shattered window.
Marco turned to Emma, his eyes wide with professional urgency. "Miss Brooks! Are you injured?!"
Emma stood pressed against the booth, shaking violently, her eyes wide with shock. "Marco... who... who are these men?!"
"Valetti’s soldiers," Marco gritted out, pulling his radio from his vest. "They bypassed our perimeter. We have to move right now! The boss is waiting!"
Before Emma could gather her notebook or coat, Marco guided her out through the back door of the coffee shop and ushered her into the back seat of an armored black SUV. Two other security vehicles formed a tight convoy around them, their tires screeching as they accelerated into the rainy night.
Ten minutes later, the convoy pulled into the subterranean underground garage of a secure, high-rise luxury residential tower in Midtown Manhattan.
The vehicle doors were thrown open.
Gabriel Moretti was standing near the private elevator, wearing no jacket, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, a look of pure, unadulterated terror on his face that evaporated the moment he saw Emma step out of the car unharmed.
He sprinted across the concrete floor, closing the distance between them in three long strides, and pulled Emma directly into his arms.
He held her tight against his chest, his strong arms wrapping around her waist, his face buried in her damp hair. He was shaking—a man who ruled an empire, trembling like a child at the thought of losing her.
"You're safe," Gabriel breathed into her hair, his voice raspy and broken. "God forgive me, Emma... you're safe."
May you like
Emma stood frozen in his embrace for a second, surrounded by his warmth, his scent of cedarwood and rain, feeling the frantic, hammering beat of his heart against her cheek.
Slowly, her shaking arms lifted, wrapping around his broad shoulders, holding onto him as the horror of the night finally melted away into the warm sanctuary of his arms.
