Chapter 3 - The Gala of Knives

The Grand Ballroom of The Plaza Hotel was a shimmering sea of gold, crystal, and hidden wickedness.

Beneath the towering glass chandeliers, hundreds of New York's elite—politicians, judges, high-society heiresses, and the ruthless crime bosses who quietly controlled them—mingled over flutes of vintage champagne and caviar.

Tonight was the Winter Solstice Gala, the premier event of the city's high society, but beneath the diamonds and tuxedos, it was a battleground.

A sleek silver Maybach pulled up to the red carpet outside the entrance. Photographers' flashbulbs exploded in a blinding rhythm as the door opened.

Vincent Moretti stepped out first. He looked imposing, dangerous, and devastatingly handsome in a custom black tuxedo. He turned and extended his hand into the vehicle.

A slender, porcelain hand placed itself in his.

Lily stepped out onto the red carpet, and the crowd of journalists gasped.

She wore a breathtaking, custom emerald-green satin gown that draped flawlessly over her frame. The dress featured a high neckline that subtly covered her healing shoulder, while the back dipped low, revealing the smooth skin of her spine. Around her neck was the legendary Moretti Emerald—a massive, antique necklace that had belonged to the family for three generations.

Her hair was styled in sleek, modern waves, and her makeup was subtle, highlighting her striking gray eyes and plump lips.

She didn't look like a maid. She looked like royalty.

Vincent placed his arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side. As they walked past the flashing cameras, he leaned down, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear.

"Keep your head high," he instructed softly, his hand resting firm and protective on the curve of her hip. "You own this room."

Lily felt a wave of nerves, but the warmth of his hand anchored her. "They're staring," she murmured under her breath.

"They are staring because you are the most captivating woman here," Vincent replied smoothly, his tone deadpan, yet sending a jolt of electricity straight to her core.

They entered the ballroom, where conversation dropped to hushed whispers the moment the Moretti power couple crossed the threshold.

"Look at her," whispered a high-society matriarch nearby. "They say she was a servant."

"She’s a gold digger who used the child to trap him," snickered another woman in diamonds.

Lily heard the whispers, but she kept her gaze fixed straight ahead, her spine straight as steel. Vincent’s jaw tightened, his eyes darkening as he cast a lethal glare toward the whispering socialites, instantly silencing them.

"Ignore them," Vincent growled softly.

"I am," Lily replied with a faint, cool smile. "Words don't bleed, Vincent. I've survived much worse than gossip."

Before Vincent could reply, a deep, raspy voice cut through the music.

"Ah, the happy couple!"

A large, heavily built man in a velvet suit approached them, flanked by four imposing bodyguards. He had greasy dark hair, small, cruel eyes, and a thick gold chain hanging over his neck.

Yuri Voronov.

The head of the Slavic syndicate, and the man who had ordered the attack on the Moretti mansion.

Vincent’s body immediately went rigid, his left hand shifting instinctively inside his tuxedo jacket toward his concealed shoulder holster. Marco and two Moretti guards tightened their circle behind them.

"Voronov," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it could freeze fire. "You're standing on dangerous ground."

Yuri chuckled, holding up a glass of vodka. "Relax, Vincent! It's a charity event. We are all civilized men tonight."

Yuri turned his cruel eyes toward Lily, scanning her from head to toe with disgusting familiarity.

"So, this is the brave little servant girl," Yuri sneered, taking a step closer. "Tell me, my dear... how does it feel to sleep in the bed of a man whose sins required you to take three bullets? Was the blood worth the diamond around your neck?"

The air around them turned violently taut. Marco drew his weapon half an inch from his jacket.

Lily didn't flinch. She stepped forward, slightly separating herself from Vincent's protective grip, facing the terrifying mob boss directly.

"Mr. Voronov," Lily spoke, her voice calm, clear, and ringing out over the surrounding hushed crowd. "The blood was a small price to pay to protect a child. But tell me... how does it feel to hire seven armed men with assault rifles, only to have them fail against an unarmed maid?"

A collective gasp echoed through the surrounding guests.

Yuri’s smile vanished instantly. His face flushed a dark, angry red.

"You insolent little bitch—" Yuri snarled, taking a step toward her.

In a fraction of a second, before Yuri’s foot could hit the carpet, Vincent was between them.

Vincent grabbed Yuri by the throat with one massive hand, slamming the heavy Slavic boss back against a marble pillar. The sound of cracking stone echoed through the edge of the ballroom. Glasses shattered as nearby tables shook.

"Touch her or speak to her again," Vincent snarled, his face inches from Yuri's, his green eyes burning with demonic fury, "and I won't wait for a war. I will rip your throat out right here in front of the mayor."

Yuri gasped for air, his bodyguards drawing their weapons, but Marco and ten Moretti soldiers instantly leveled silenced pistols at the Slavs' chests.

The ballroom descended into absolute panic, guests backing away in terror.

Don Dominic Salazer stepped into the center of the ring, lifting his hands. "Enough!" Dominic commanded. "Vincent, release him. Not tonight."

Vincent stared into Yuri's bulging eyes for three long seconds, feeling the pulse of the man's throat beneath his fingers. Slowly, deliberately, he released his grip. Yuri collapsed to his knees, coughing violently.

Vincent adjusted his tuxedo cuffs, looking down at the disgraced boss. "Get out of my sight."

Yuri scrambled to his feet, glaring at Vincent and Lily with pure, unadulterated hatred. "This isn't over, Moretti," Yuri wheezed, backed away by his guards. "You think she’s safe? You think you can protect her? She’s going to die, and you’re going to watch!"

Yuri retreated into the crowd, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in his wake.

Vincent turned back to Lily. His breathing was heavy, his knuckles white, his adrenaline surging. He looked at her, expecting to see terror in her eyes after witnessing his sudden, terrifying violence.

Instead, he found her looking at him with calm, steady gray eyes.

"Are you alright?" Vincent asked, his voice rough.

"I'm fine," Lily said softly. "Are you?"

Vincent stared at her, stunned by her composure. Without a word, he took her hand, weaving his fingers through hers tightly. "We are leaving."

The ride back to the Long Island estate was silent and intense. The glass partition between the back seat and the driver was raised.

Lily sat near the window, watching the rain beat against the glass as the limousine drove through the storm. She could feel the waves of dark, volatile energy radiating off Vincent. He sat beside her, jaw clenched, staring straight ahead.

"You shouldn't have provoked him," Vincent spoke suddenly, breaking the heavy silence.

Lily turned to him. "He was insulting you, and he attacked my character. I wasn't going to let him intimidate me."

"He is a lunatic, Lily!" Vincent snapped, turning his burning gaze onto her. "He doesn't play by rules! You don't understand the danger you are in!"

"I know exactly what danger I'm in!" Lily shouted back, her own temper flaring for the first time. "I took three bullets, remember?! I know what lead feels like! I know what dying feels like! Do not talk to me like I am a helpless child who needs to be hidden away in a golden cage!"

Vincent stared at her, caught off guard by her fierce outburst.

"I took this contract to protect Matteo, yes," Lily continued, her voice trembling with raw emotion, tears brimming in her gray eyes. "But I also thought... I thought I could help you. But you look at me and all you see is a liability! A fragile maid you have to keep alive to fulfill your honor!"

"That is NOT what I see!" Vincent roared, grabbing her by her shoulders and pulling her close, startling her into silence.

Their faces were inches apart. She could feel his fast, heavy breathing, the intense heat radiating from his skin.

"Then what do you see?" Lily whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Tell me, Vincent. What am I to you?"

Vincent’s green eyes searched hers, filled with a chaotic storm of conflict, desire, and fear.

"I see the only woman who made me feel alive after three years of being dead," Vincent confessed, his voice thick and raw with emotion. "I see a woman who put her life on the line for my son. I see someone so brave, so beautiful, that it scares me to my core."

He lifted his hand, his thumb catching the tear on her cheek.

"I am the Iron Wolf, Lily," he whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "I am supposed to fear nothing. But the thought of Yuri Voronov—or anyone else—putting a single scratch on you again... it terrifies me. It terrifies me because I am falling in love with you, and in my world, love is a death sentence."

Lily’s heart stopped.

The world seemed to pause. The rain outside, the humming engine, the dark night—everything faded into nothingness.

"Vincent..." she breathed.

Before she could finish his name, Vincent leaned down and captured her lips with his.

The kiss was explosive, fierce, born from weeks of suppressed tension, fear, and undeniable longing. It was demanding yet tender, a collision of two broken souls finding solace in one another. Lily gasped against his mouth, her fingers tangling into his soft, dark hair, pulling him closer.

Vincent pulled her onto his lap, his large arms wrapping around her waist, holding her close as if she were the only real thing in a world of ghosts. Lily surrendered completely to the kiss, the taste of him—whiskey, rain, and raw passion—intoxicating her senses.

When they finally broke apart for air, their foreheads rested against each other. Their breathing was ragged, their hearts hammering in unison.

Vincent looked into her gray eyes, his dark mask completely gone, leaving behind a man exposed and vulnerable.

"Tell me to stop," Vincent rasped softly. "Tell me now, Lily. Because if you don't, I will never let you go. Contract or no contract."

Lily reached up, placing her hand gently over his heart, feeling its powerful, rapid beat beneath his vest.

May you like

"Don't stop," she whispered softly. "I don't want to be let go."

Vincent smiled—a true, breathtaking smile that reached his eyes for the first time since she had met him. He kissed her again, softer this time, a promise carved in the dark of the moving car.
