Chapter 5 - The Healing of the Wolf

Two months later.

The wreckage of the Long Island estate had been restored, but the atmosphere inside the château was completely transformed.

The dark, gloomy halls that once felt like a museum of grief were now filled with light, fresh flowers, and the joyous sounds of a six-year-old boy playing. The guards still patrolled the perimeter, but their demeanor had shifted; they no longer walked like men expecting death, but like protectors of a thriving home.

The transformation was entirely due to Lily.

She had refused to remain a silent figurehead. She threw herself into managing the estate, reorganizing the staff, and creating a warm, loving environment for Matteo. More importantly, she had slowly, patiently dismantled the thick walls around Vincent’s heart.

It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon.

Vincent sat in his vast grand study, surrounded by stacks of legal documents, financial ledgers, and syndicate reports. The Slavic territory had been completely absorbed into the Moretti empire, making Vincent the undisputed ruler of the East Coast.

Yet, despite his total victory, he looked distracted.

He wasn't looking at the financial reports detailing tens of millions of dollars. He was looking at a small silver-framed photograph on his desk.

It was a photo taken the previous week at Matteo’s school play. Lily was laughing, holding a bouquet of yellow sunflowers, while Matteo sat on Vincent’s shoulders, wearing a goofy handmade dragon costume. Vincent himself was caught on camera smiling—a genuine, warm smile that he hadn't worn in over a decade.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in," Vincent called out.

The door opened, and Lily stepped into the room, holding a silver tray with two cups of fresh tea. She wore a simple, elegant blue sun-dress, her dark hair pinned back. The scar on her temple had faded into a fine, silver line, and her shoulder had healed, though she still did physical therapy twice a week.

"You've been in here for five hours," Lily said gently, placing the tray on his desk. "Even the Iron Wolf needs a break."

Vincent smiled, leaning back in his heavy leather executive chair. He reached out, grabbing her wrist gently, pulling her down onto his lap.

Lily gasped softly, laughing as she settled onto his thighs, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Vincent! What if Marco walks in?"

"Marco knows better than to enter without knocking," Vincent murmured, pressing a warm kiss to the sensitive spot beneath her ear, making her shiver. "Besides, I am the boss. I do what I want."

"You are insatiable," Lily teased, running her fingers through his dark hair.

Vincent’s hands rested on her waist, his expression growing serious as he looked into her gray eyes.

"I received a document today from the family lawyers," Vincent said softly.

Lily raised an eyebrow. "What kind of document?"

Vincent reached across the desk and picked up a manila folder, handing it to her.

Lily opened the folder. Inside were official legal papers bearing the state seal. As her eyes scanned the heading, her breath caught in her throat.

PETITION FOR FORMAL ADOPTION AND AMENDMENT OF MARRIAGE CONTRACT.

"Vincent..." she whispered, looking up at him in shock.

"The original marriage contract we signed in the hospital was a temporary three-year deal," Vincent explained, his voice deep and filled with intense sincerity. "It was designed to protect you, give you status, and allow you an easy exit once the threat was gone."

He took her hand, kissing her knuckles.

"I tore that contract up this morning," Vincent revealed. "These new papers... they offer no exit. They make you Matteo's legal mother. And they make our marriage permanent under the law, without conditions, without timelines, and without financial clauses."

Lily felt tears swelling in her eyes. "Vincent..."

"I know I dragged you into a dangerous, dark world, Lily," Vincent said, his green eyes burning with vulnerability. "I know I am a man with blood on my hands. But you saved my son, and then... you saved me. You brought light back into this house. You made me remember what it means to be a human being, not just a monster in a suit."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He opened it to reveal a simple, elegant platinum band, unadorned by massive diamonds—a plain, honest wedding ring.

"I gave you the diamond before to mark you as a Moretti for protection," Vincent said softly. "I want to give you this ring to ask you to be my wife... because I love you. With all my heart. For the rest of my life."

Lily broke into tears—not tears of fear or pain, but of overwhelming, profound joy.

She cupped his jaw in her hands, looking at the man who had transformed from a terrifying mob boss into her rock, her protector, and her greatest love.

"Yes," Lily sobbed happily. "Yes, Vincent! I love you so much!"

Vincent slid the platinum band onto her ring finger, right beside her engagement ring. He pulled her flush against his chest, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their true, real vows.

The door to the study suddenly burst open.

"Daddy! Miss Lily!" Matteo yelled, running in with a drawing in his hand. He stopped, seeing them kissing, and immediately covered his eyes with his hands, giggling. "Ewww! Yuck!"

Vincent and Lily broke apart, laughing.

"Matteo, how many times have I told you to knock?" Vincent said with mock sternness, though his eyes were crinkling with warmth.

"Look what I drew!" Matteo said, running up to the desk and placing a colorful crayon drawing over the legal documents.

It was a drawing of three people holding hands under a bright yellow sun. A tall man in a black suit, a little boy with a dragon hat, and a woman in a green dress with a golden crown over her head. Above them, written in shaky six-year-old handwriting, were the words: MY FAMILY.

Lily pulled Matteo onto her lap alongside Vincent, holding the drawing close to her chest.

"It's beautiful, baby," Lily whispered, kissing Matteo's cheek.

"Are you my real mommy now?" Matteo asked, looking up at Lily with wide, innocent brown eyes. "Nanny said you signed papers."

May you like

Lily wiped a tear from her cheek, looking from Matteo to Vincent, whose strong arm was wrapped securely around them both.

"Yes, Matteo," Lily said, her voice filled with absolute certainty. "I am your real mommy now. And I am never, ever going away."
