Chapter 3 - The Unraveling“What is the meaning of this?”

A sharp, authoritative voice cut through the gathering crowd. District Attorney Arthur Vance—a man notoriously proud of his strict enforcement of white-collar crime—pushed his way through the circle of onlookers, his face flushed with irritation. He looked from Derek Voss to Luca Moretti. “Mr. Moretti, Mr. Voss, what is happening here? This is a charity event.”
“It’s a theater, Arthur,” Luca said smoothly, never taking his eyes off Derek. “And the lead actor has been caught embezzling millions from sick children.”
“That is an outrageous lie!” Derek protested, raising his voice so the entire ballroom could hear, desperately trying to rally public opinion. “This woman is a disgruntled former employee who suffered a mental breakdown after her husband’s tragic accident! Look at her! She’s crashing a charity event with a known syndicate boss to extort me!”
The crowd murmured nervously. Whispers rippled through the rows of tables. Several prominent donors stepped back, unsure of whom to believe.
Elena didn't flinch. She reached into her emerald handbag, pulled out a sleek silver tablet, and handed it directly to District Attorney Vance.
“Those are the encrypted bank ledgers, Mr. Vance,” Elena said steadily, her voice echoing in the sudden hush of the room. “Every forged vendor signature, every inflated medical invoice, and every wire transfer sent directly to Derek Voss’s personal accounts over the last three years. The decryption key is locked to my biometric signature. Open it.”
Vance stared at the tablet, hesitating for a second before pressing his thumb against the glass screen.
The screen blinked, loading a massive, color-coded spreadsheet that detailed millions of dollars in missing charity funds, cross-referenced with corporate shell companies and signatures bearing Derek Voss’s legal seal.
Vance’s face hardened. He looked up from the screen, his gaze locking onto Derek with absolute disgust. “My God, Derek... the pediatric wing upgrades... the pharmaceutical grants...”
“It’s fabricated!” Derek lunged forward, desperate to snatch the tablet from the DA’s hands. “She hacked the foundation's server! It’s all a setup!”
He didn't get within three feet of the district attorney.
Rafe moved with blinding speed, grabbing Derek by the lapels of his tuxedo and slamming him back against a marble pillar with a sickening thud that rattled the champagne flutes on a nearby tray. The entire ballroom erupted into screams.
“Keep your hands to yourself, Mr. Voss,” Rafe murmured dangerously, pressing a heavy forearm against Derek’s chest, pinning him in place.
“Arrest him!” Derek choked out, gasping for air against the pressure. “Arrest this lunatic!”
District Attorney Vance adjusted his glasses, his expression turning glacial. He pulled a heavy leather phone case from his pocket and dialed three digits.
“This is District Attorney Vance,” he said into the phone, his voice carrying across the silent hall. “I need a tactical unit at the Chicago Historical Museum immediately. We have a suspect for grand larceny, wire fraud, and corporate embezzlement.”
Derek stopped struggling. He slumped back against the marble pillar, his eyes darting wildly around the room, realizing with horrifying clarity that his empire—built on stolen charity funds, political bribes, and blood—had just collapsed in less than sixty seconds.
As sirens began to wail in the distance, cutting through the damp Chicago night outside, Luca Moretti stepped forward and looked down at the disgraced philanthropist.
“You tried to poison a pregnant woman and frame me for a war,” Luca said softly, his voice a low, terrifying hum meant only for Derek’s ears. “You forgot one fundamental rule of Chicago, Derek.”

“What... what rule?” Derek whispered, trembling.
“Never underestimate a mother who has nothing left to lose.”
