Chapter 4 - Shadows of the PastTwo days later, the headlines of every major newspaper in the Midwest blared the same explosive story: PHILANTHROPY FRAUD EXPOSED: DEREK VOSS ARRESTED IN MASSIVE EMBEZZLEMENT SCANDAL.

Inside Belladonna, however, the atmosphere was entirely different.

The restaurant was closed for a private restructuring. Sophia Vale sat in the back holding cell, awaiting a federal indictment for conspiracy and accessory to poisoning. The kitchen staff had been thoroughly vetted and replaced where necessary, and the entire establishment was undergoing a deep, symbolic cleansing.

Elena sat at a corner table near the window, a warm cup of herbal tea resting between her hands. Sunlight streamed through the glass, warming the polished mahogany and casting a gentle glow over her face.

The door chimed.

Luca Moretti walked in. He wore his usual dark suit, but without the heavy coat, looking less like a looming syndicate boss and more like an ordinary man stopping by for an afternoon chat.

“You’re working too hard,” Luca noted, pulling out the chair opposite her and sitting down without waiting for an invitation.

“I’m not working,” Elena smiled faintly, looking down at her swollen stomach. “I’m taking inventory. The new management offered me the general manager position this morning.”

Luca raised an eyebrow. “And what did you say?”

“I said I’d think about it after the baby is born.” She took a small sip of her tea, her eyes studying him with quiet curiosity. “You didn't have to do all of that at the gala, you know. Handing Derek over to the DA publicly... you exposed yourself to a lot of unnecessary police scrutiny.”

“The police scrutiny of a legitimate businessman is far easier to manage than the constant threat of a Russian-backed proxy war,” Luca replied dryly. Then, his expression softened slightly. “Besides, Daniel Hart was an honest man who was killed by cowards. Justice was long overdue in this city.”

Elena fell silent, the weight of her husband’s memory wrapping around her like a familiar shawl. For a year, she had lived in terror, believing that speaking the truth meant signing her family’s death warrant. Now, the shadow had lifted. The man who had terrorized her dreams was sitting in a federal holding cell, facing life behind bars.

“Milo asks about you,” Elena said softly.

“Does he?”

“He told me this morning that you look like a wizard because you made the bad man disappear with just a wave of your hand.”

A rare, genuine smile touched the corners of Luca’s mouth. “A wizard. I’ll take that over monster.”

“You were never a monster to us, Luca,” she said, using his first name for the very first time.

The air between them shifted, charged with a quiet, undeniable intimacy forged in the fires of survival and shared secrets. Luca reached across the table, his large, callused hand covering her smaller one. The warmth of his skin sent a sudden, electric shiver through her veins.

“My offer still stands,” Luca said quietly.

Elena blinked, her heart skipping a beat. “What offer?”

“My estate is large, heavily guarded, and entirely safe,” he said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with intense, unwavering sincerity. “You and Milo don't ever have to worry about rent, shifts, or unsafe neighborhoods again. Come live where you belong, Elena. Let me protect what is mine.”
