Chapter 5 - A New FoundationThe transition into Luca Moretti’s estate didn't happen overnight, but when it did, it felt less like moving into a fortress and more like finding a long-lost home.

The third-floor nursery, previously a dusty, unused suite of rooms overlooking the manicured gardens, was transformed within a week into a bright, cheerful space painted in soft pastels. Milo spent hours helping Rafe assemble a wooden rocking horse, chattering away with the unfiltered joy of a six-year-old who finally realized the world could be a safe place.

Elena adjusted to the rhythm of the estate with a quiet grace that earned the deep respect of every member of Luca’s inner circle. For the first time in her adult life, she didn't have to calculate every grocery bill, check the expiration dates on discounted medicine, or look over her shoulder when walking down a hallway.

Yet, she refused to sit idle.

Using the settlement funds recovered from Derek Voss’s seized assets—which District Attorney Vance officially redirected into a newly formed victim-restitution trust—Elena established the Daniel Hart Memorial Foundation, dedicated to providing financial support and legal protection to whistleblowers and working-class families trapped in corporate corruption.

And Luca stood quietly by her side through every step of it.

One evening, three weeks before her due date, Elena stood on the private balcony of the master suite, watching the sun dip below the Chicago skyline. The sky burned in shades of amber, violet, and deep crimson.

Footsteps approached from behind, and a heavy, warm cashmere blanket draped over her shoulders.

“You’ll catch a cold,” Luca’s deep voice murmured as he stepped up beside her, resting his hands lightly on the stone railing.

“I’m fine,” Elena smiled, leaning back slightly against his shoulder. “I was just thinking about that rainy night at Belladonna. It feels like a lifetime ago.”

“It was a lifetime ago,” Luca agreed, turning his head to look down at her. “You died on that marble floor, Elena. And a completely different woman stood up.”

“Thanks to you.”

“No,” Luca corrected softly, his fingers brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “Thanks to you. You brought the fire into a room full of ice, Elena. You taught me that true strength isn't about how many enemies you can defeat, but how fiercely you protect the ones you love.”

He reached down, his large, warm palm coming to rest gently against her swollen stomach. Inside, as if on cue, the baby gave a soft, reassuring kick.

Luca’s breath hitched. A look of profound, sacred wonder crossed the face of the man who had terrified Chicago’s underworld for decades.

“She’s strong,” Luca whispered, a rare, breathtaking smile breaking across his features.

“She gets it from her mother,” Elena teased softly, tilting her head up.

Luca didn't answer with words. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, tender kiss that tasted of absolute peace, eternal loyalty, and the sweet promise of a tomorrow neither of them had ever expected to share.
