Chapter 3 - The Fortress on the Lake

Three days later, the rain cleared, giving way to a crisp, golden autumn morning.

A fleet of three blacked-out Cadillac Escalades pulled up to the grand stone gates of the Calloway Estate in Lake Forest. The property sat on forty acres of private woodland overlooking the endless blue expanse of Lake Michigan, surrounded by a twelve-foot wrought-iron fence equipped with thermal security cameras and laser sensors.

The middle SUV came to a stop beneath the porte-cochère of the main manor—a breathtaking French-country château built of limestone and slate.

Royce stepped out of the vehicle first, extending his hand to guide Della out.

Della hesitated on the leather seat, looking up at the sprawling mansion with wide, intimidated eyes. She was wearing a soft, oversized cashmere sweater and dark leggings that Royce’s personal shopper had delivered to her hospital room, along with four trunks of designer clothes she hadn't dared to unpack.

"Royce..." she said quietly, using his first name for the first time after two days of his quiet insistence. "This... this is too much. I can just rent a small apartment near the clinic. You’ve already paid my medical bills and hired lawyers for the court case—"

"Della," Royce interrupted, his tone gentle but unyielding as he took her hand, helping her stand. "The press is swarming your old apartment building. Cordelia’s family has process servers and tabloid reporters looking for you. Here, you are safe. No one enters these grounds without my personal authorization."

He brought her hand to his lips, kissing the soft skin just above her bandage.

"Besides," he added, a rare, soft warmth touching his eyes, "the nursery on the second floor faces the lake. It gets the morning sun."

Della’s heart did a strange, fluttery somersault against her ribs.

He walked her through the grand oak doors. The interior of the château was magnificent—vaulted ceilings, stone fireplaces, warm hardwood floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows that showcased the sparkling blue water of the lake.

A middle-aged woman in a crisp gray dress stepped forward, bowing her head respectfully.

"Welcome home, Miss Marsh," she said warmly. "I am Mrs. Gable, the estate manager. Your rooms have been prepared, and the chef has prepared a light lunch per your nutritionist's guidelines."

"Nutritionist?" Della echoed, looking up at Royce.

"You are eating for two, and you were severely malnourished when you arrived at Northwestern," Royce said simply, guiding her toward the grand staircase. "You will rest, you will eat, and you will heal."

He led her up to the master wing on the east side of the house. He opened a set of double doors to reveal a massive suite featuring a king-sized bed, a private fireplace, a sitting area overlooking the lake, and a door that connected directly to a sunlit room painted in soft cream and pale sage.

Inside that second room sat a hand-carved mahogany crib, plush velvet armchairs, shelves lined with classic children's books, and soft, organic cotton blankets stack neatly in cedar chests.

Della walked into the nursery, her breath catching in her throat. She ran her fingers over the smooth wood of the crib, a tear slipping down her cheek.

"When I found out I was pregnant," Della whispered, her voice trembling, "my ex-fiancé, Julian, told me I was ruining his life. He gave me five hundred dollars and told me to get rid of it, or never call him again. When I refused... he packed his bags and left the state."

Royce stepped into the nursery behind her. He stood close enough that she could feel the intense, protective heat of his body.

"Julian was a coward who didn't recognize a miracle when it was given to him," Royce said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark baritone. "If he ever shows his face in this city again, I will personally ensure he regrets the day he was born."

Della turned around, looking up into Royce’s dark, handsome face. "Why are you doing all of this, Royce? Is it just because of what happened five years ago? A debt of honor?"

Royce looked down at her, his dark eyes tracing the curve of her soft lips, the faint freckles across her nose, and the gentle swell of her stomach beneath the cashmere sweater.

"Five years ago, I owed you my life," Royce whispered, reaching out to tuck a strand of dark hair behind her ear. "Today... I am doing this because the thought of you suffering, or being afraid, makes my chest feel like it’s collapsing. I am not a good man, Della. The world I walk in is dark and violent. But to you... and to that child... I will be whatever you need me to be."

Della’s hand moved on instinct, resting against Royce’s broad chest, feeling the heavy, steady thud of his heart beneath his shirt.

"You are a good man to me," she murmured softly.

Royce’s gaze darkened with a sudden, searing intensity, but before he could speak, his satellite phone buzzed in his pocket.

He pulled it out, looking at the encrypted caller ID. It was Gabe, his head of underworld security.

Royce stepped out onto the balcony, answering the call. "Speak."

"Boss," Gabe’s grave voice came through the speaker. "Harlan Vance just left a private meeting at the harbor. He didn't go to his bankruptcy attorneys."

"Where did he go?"

"He met with Don Victor Moretti," Gabe reported. "Vance sold the deed to his remaining offshore shipping warehouse to Moretti in exchange for a contract team. Moretti's men are making moves, Boss. They know about the girl."

Royce’s hand tightened around the steel casing of the phone until the glass creaked under the pressure.

"Moretti thinks he can use Vance's grudge to push into my northern shipping lanes," Royce said, his voice dropping into absolute ice. "Deploy the strike teams around the estate. Double the perimeter guards. If a single Moretti vehicle comes within two miles of Lake Forest... annihilate them."
