Chapter 6 - The Sunrise over the Water

Seven months later.

Late spring had arrived in Lake Forest. The grounds of the Calloway Estate were ablaze with blooming pink peonies, white roses, and lush green lawns stretching down to the crystal-clear blue waters of Lake Michigan.

On the grand stone patio overlooking the water, a white marquee tent was adorned with thousands of fresh white orchids and flickering crystal lanterns.

Music from a harpist floated gently through the warm afternoon air.

In the master suite upstairs, Della stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror.

She wore an exquisite, custom-designed wedding gown of French lace and silk, featuring a modest sweetheart neckline, long sheer sleeves, and a flowing train that shimmered under the sunlight.

Her dark hair was styled in an elegant, soft updo interwoven with tiny white pearls.

Standing in a wooden bassinet beside the vanity was a seven-month-old baby boy. He had a mop of soft dark hair, chubby rosy cheeks, and bright, curious icy-blue eyes that were an exact replica of his father’s.

His name was Gabriel Calloway.

Della leaned down, picking up her son and cradling him against her lace gown. Gabriel cooed happily, grabbing a pearl from her hair with his tiny, chubby hand.

"You look breathtaking, my lady," a warm voice called from the doorway.

Mrs. Gable stepped into the room, holding a bouquet of lily of the valley and white roses. Tears glistened in the older woman's eyes as she looked at Della.

"Mr. Calloway is waiting at the altar," Mrs. Gable smiled. "He’s been pacing the lawn for twenty minutes."

Della laughed—a light, musical sound that filled the room—and kissed Gabriel’s tiny forehead. "Then we shouldn't keep him waiting."

Down on the sunlit lawn, eighty guests—including top business leaders, city officials who had been vetted by Calloway security, doctors from Northwestern, and staff members from the Ashworth Grand whom Della had personally invited—sat in white wooden chairs.

At the end of the flower-dusted aisle stood Royce Calloway.

He wore a tailored black tuxedo, a white silk bowtie, and a cream rose boutonnieres pinned to his lapel. He looked impossibly handsome, his tall, powerful frame commanding the attention of every person present.

When the harpist began playing the wedding march, the crowd stood up.

Della walked out onto the stone terrace, holding her bridal bouquet in one hand, while Gabe walked beside her, proudly holding little Gabriel in his arms.

Royce looked up.

The moment his icy-blue eyes locked onto Della, the stern, formidable mask he wore for the world completely melted away. A look of such intense, fierce, and breathless love washed over his face that several guests gasped softly.

Della walked down the aisle toward him, her heart beating a steady, joyful rhythm in her chest.

When she reached the altar, Royce stepped forward, taking her hand into his large, warm palm. He brought her knuckles to his lips, kissing the faint, clean crescent scar on her left hand before looking into her eyes.

"You look like a dream, Della," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"It's not a dream, Royce," she whispered back, beaming up at him. "It's our life."

The officiant stepped forward, speaking words of love, resilience, and union.

When the time came for the vows, Royce did not read from a prepared card. He looked directly into Della’s eyes, holding both of her hands in his.

"Five years ago," Royce said, his voice echoing clearly across the sunlit lawn, "I was a bleeding man in a dark alley, waiting for the end. You opened a door, pulled me out of the cold, and bled for a stranger. You gave me my life. Today, before God and everyone here, I give that life back to you. I promise to protect you, to honor you, to cherish our son, and to build a world where you will never know fear, pain, or loneliness again. You are my queen, Della. Forever."

Della wept softly, smiling through her tears as she looked up at the man who had saved her life twice over.

"Royce," Della said, her voice steady and clear. "When I was alone in the dark, I thought my life was over. But you showed me that love is not something to be feared, but a sanctuary to rest in. You fought for me when I couldn't fight for myself. I promise to love you, to stand beside you in light and shadow, and to love our family with everything I am, for all the days of my life."

"By the power vested in me," the officiant announced with a broad smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Mr. Calloway... you may kiss your bride."

Royce didn't hesitate.

He pulled Della into his arms, dipping her back slightly as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that made the entire crowd erupt into thunderous applause and cheers.

Gabriel cooed loudly from Gabe’s arms, waving his tiny hands as if joining in the celebration.

When Royce lifted her back up, Della laughed, resting her forehead against his chest, feeling the heavy, rhythmic thud of his heart—the same heart she had protected five years ago in a dark alleyway, and the same heart that now belonged entirely to her.

Under the bright, golden afternoon sun, with the lake sparkling behind them and their child laughing in the warm breeze, Della Calloway stepped into her new life.

The waitress who had once been shoved into shattered glass was now safe, cherished, and loved beyond measure—a queen in her husband’s fortress, forever home.
