Chapter 5 - Fire and Redemption

By midnight, the storm over Chicago had returned with a vengeance.

The Moretti family’s stronghold—a massive, fortified scrap-metal processing facility on the edge of the Calumet River—was surrounded by forty armored Calloway vehicles.

The raid had not been a negotiation. It had been an absolute, merciless purge.

Within forty-five minutes, Royce’s elite forces had breached every gate, disarmed every guard, and seized control of Don Victor Moretti’s illegal shipping records, weapon caches, and offshore accounts.

Inside the central office, Don Victor Moretti—a sixty-year-old mob boss with graying hair and an expensive Italian suit— sat behind his desk, surrounded by four armed Calloway operatives.

The double doors swung open.

Royce Calloway stepped into the room. His left arm was tightly bound in a black tactical sling beneath a heavy leather coat, but his gait was steady, powerful, and utterly terrifying.

He threw a thick manila folder onto Moretti’s desk.

"What is this?" Moretti rasped, his voice trembling despite his efforts to remain stoic.

"That is a complete ledger of every bank account, tax shelter, and federal crime your family has committed in the state of Illinois for twenty-five years," Royce said coldly, leaning over the desk with his right hand. "The FBI has already received a copy. Federal warrants were signed thirty minutes ago."

Moretti went pale. "Calloway... we can talk about this! Harlan Vance lied to me! He told me the girl was just a witness! I didn't know—"

"You sent armed mercenaries into a medical clinic where the woman carrying my child was receiving care," Royce interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the air in the room feel freezing cold. "There is no talking, Victor. You are finished. Your syndicate is dead. Your name is erased."

Royce turned his back on Moretti, walking toward the door.

"Gabe," Royce called out quietly.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Hand Don Moretti over to the federal authorities. And as for Harlan Vance..." Royce paused, looking back over his shoulder with eyes of pure iron. "...make sure he spends the rest of his life in a maximum-security state facility where he will never see the light of day again."

"Understood, Boss."

An hour later, Royce returned to the Calloway Estate.

The château was silent, bathed in the soft amber light of the grand hallway lamps.

Royce walked up the stairs to the master suite. He quietly pushed the door open, shedding his heavy coat and setting it aside.

Della was sitting in the middle of the large king-sized bed, wrapped in a plush white robe, a warm cup of chamomile tea resting on the nightstand. She wasn't sleeping. She had been waiting for him.

When she saw him walk in—alive, whole, his face clean—she let out a long breath and threw back the covers.

"Royce," she whispered.

Royce crossed the room quickly, sitting on the edge of the mattress. He reached out, his warm hand cupping the back of her head as she buried her face in the crook of his neck, inhaling his familiar, comforting scent of cedarwood and rain.

"It's over, Della," Royce whispered into her soft hair, his strong arm wrapping around her waist, holding her close against his chest. "Moretti is in federal custody. Harlan Vance is going away forever. Cordelia Vance’s trial begins next month, and she will be serving prison time. No one will ever threaten you again."

Della pulled back slightly, looking up into his dark, beautiful eyes.

She reached up, her soft fingers tracing the line of his jaw, moving down to the bandage on his shoulder.

"You took a bullet for me," she murmured, her voice filled with a deep, overwhelming warmth. "You risked everything for a girl who used to wipe down tables for minimum wage."

"You are not a waitress to me, Della," Royce said softly, taking her hand and placing it over his heart. "You are the woman who saved my life five years ago. You are the woman who brought light into a heart that had been cold for thirty years. You are my home."

Della felt a tear slip down her cheek, but this time, it was a tear of pure, unadulterated happiness.

She leaned up, pressing her lips softly against his.

Royce let out a low, ragged breath, sliding his hand behind her head, deepening the kiss with a fierce, tender passion that swept through Della’s entire body like wildfire. She pulled him closer, wrapping her arms around his neck, giving herself over completely to the man who had fought through hell to give her a future.
