Chapter 3 - The Safe RoomThe "safe room" was an underground bunker that looked like a luxury hotel suite, complete with reinforced steel walls, independent ventilation, and enough rations to survive a month. Emma huddled on the plush sofa, her arms wrapped fiercely around the triplets.

Leo was asleep, his head resting on her chest. Lucas was gripping her sleeve, staring at the heavy steel door with wide, terrified eyes. Liam was quietly humming a lullaby she had taught him, completely oblivious to the fact that heavily armed men were currently patrolling the grounds above them to prevent an assassination squad from breaching the perimeter.
Hours passed. The silence was agonizing. Emma’s mind raced. She was a kindergarten teacher. She was used to spilled juice and temper tantrums, not cartel wars and lockdown protocols. Yet, as she held Gabriel's children, she felt a fierce, maternal protectiveness that terrified her. She loved these boys. And heaven help her, she was becoming dangerously captivated by their father.
The heavy steel door hissed and unsealed.
Emma gasped, pulling the boys closer.
Gabriel stepped inside. He was covered in sweat and grime. There was a smear of blood across his cheekbone, and his white shirt was torn at the shoulder, revealing a dark, angry bruise. But he was alive.
"It's over," he said quietly, locking the door behind him. "The perimeter is secure. The threat is neutralized."
Emma let out a shaky breath, tears of pure relief spilling over her eyelashes. She didn't think; she just reacted. She gently untangled herself from the boys, stood up, and crossed the room.
Gabriel braced himself, expecting her to scream, to quit, to demand to be sent back to the city away from the violence.
Instead, Emma reached up with trembling hands and gently wiped the blood from his cheek with her thumb.
"Are you hurt?" she whispered.
Gabriel stared down at her, completely paralyzed by the gentle touch. In his world, blood meant weakness. It meant failure. It meant someone was going to pay. But Emma touched his blood like it was a wound to be healed, not a sin to be punished.
"It's not my blood," he rasped, his voice rough.
Emma’s breath hitched, but she didn't pull away. "You need to rest. The boys are okay. They were brave."
Gabriel looked over her shoulder at his sons, safe and unharmed on the sofa. Then he looked back at the woman who had kept them calm. The adrenaline from the gunfight, the long months of agonizing grief, and the sudden, overwhelming warmth of this woman all crashed over him at once.
He reached out, grabbing her waist and pulling her flush against his hard chest.
Emma gasped, her hands flattening against his muscular chest.
"Gabriel," she breathed, using his first name for the very first time.
"I tried to keep my distance," Gabriel muttered fiercely, burying his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet, clean scent of vanilla and rain that clung to her skin. "I told myself you were just a nanny. That you were temporary. But then you laughed. And you looked at me without fear. And you touched my sons as if they were your own."
"They need a mother," Emma whispered, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
"And what do I need, Emma?" he demanded, pulling back just enough to look at her mouth. "Tell me what I need."
"You need someone to remind you that you're alive," she answered bravely.
With a low groan, Gabriel brought his mouth down on hers. It was not a gentle kiss. It was desperate, bruising, and deeply possessive. It was the kiss of a starving man tasting water for the first time in a desert. Emma surrendered to it instantly, her fingers curling into his ruined shirt, opening her mouth to him, matching his intensity with her own quiet fire.
He backed her up against the steel wall, his large hands mapping the curves of her hips, his kiss consuming her. For the first time since Isabella died, the cold, ruthless Mafia boss felt the ice around his heart completely shatter.
But as Gabriel kissed the nanny of his children, the security radio on his belt crackled to life.
"Boss," Matteo’s voice came through, grim and urgent. "We have a leak. The Colombos knew exactly where the perimeter sensors were blind. Someone inside the house gave them the codes."

Gabriel pulled back from Emma, his chest heaving, his eyes suddenly going flat and dark. The beautiful, fragile moment was shattered. The monster had been awakened again.
"Trust no one," Gabriel said into the radio, his eyes fixed on Emma. "I'm bringing the girl up for questioning."
