Chapter 5 - Blood and RainThe basement corridor was eerily quiet. The lights flickered, casting long, sinister shadows against the concrete walls.

Emma sat in the holding cell, sobbing into her hands. Her heart was broken. Gabriel had looked at her with such cold hatred. She had fallen in love with a man who couldn't trust her, a man whose world was too soaked in blood to see the truth.
Suddenly, a loud explosion rocked the foundation of the house.
Dust fell from the ceiling. The heavy steel door at the end of the corridor blew inward, twisting off its hinges.
Emma scrambled to the back of her cell.
Three men in tactical gear stepped through the smoke, carrying suppressed automatic weapons. They weren't Gabriel’s men. They spoke in rapid Italian, pointing toward the ventilation grate at the far end of the hall—the grate that led directly into the safe room where the triplets were sleeping.
They were going to drop a gas canister into the room.
Panic, primal and fierce, overrode Emma's fear. She grabbed the metal bars of her cell. "Hey!" she screamed at the top of her lungs. "Hey! Over here!"
The assassins turned, surprised to find a woman in a cell.
"Help me!" Emma cried, playing the desperate victim. "Moretti locked me in here! If you let me out, I can give you the override codes for his vault!"
The leader of the squad sneered. He walked over to her cell, punching in the master override code Matteo had given them. The cell door clicked and slid open.
"Show us the vault, bitch," the leader snarled, grabbing her arm.
The moment the cell door opened, Emma didn't run for the vault. She grabbed the heavy metal flashlight hanging from the guard's belt and swung it with all her might, smashing it directly into the leader's temple.
The man dropped like a stone.
Emma lunged for the gas canister strapped to his vest, but the second assassin grabbed her by the hair, throwing her violently against the concrete wall. Pain exploded in her skull. She crumpled to the floor, her vision swimming.
The assassin raised his gun, pointing it squarely at her chest.
"Die, whore," he spat in broken English.
BANG.
The assassin’s head snapped back in a spray of red mist. He collapsed beside Emma.
Gabriel stood at the end of the hallway, smoke curling from the barrel of his pistol. He looked like the Devil himself, his eyes completely black with rage, his chest heaving. Without hesitation, he fired two more shots, dropping the third assassin before the man could even raise his weapon.
Silence descended on the basement, save for the ringing in Emma’s ears.
Gabriel dropped his gun. He ran down the hall, sliding to his knees beside Emma in a pool of blood and debris. He gathered her into his arms, pulling her up against his chest, burying his face in her hair.
"Emma," he choked out, his voice breaking completely. "Emma, mio dio, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."
Emma winced, holding her bleeding head, but she wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "The boys... Gabriel, they were going for the boys..."
"They're safe," Gabriel whispered fiercely, pressing kisses to her forehead, her cheeks, her lips. "They're safe. You saved them. You stalled them long enough for me to get here. You saved my sons."
"You thought I betrayed you," she sobbed, the emotional whiplash finally catching up with her.
"I was a fool," Gabriel vowed, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe. "Matteo framed you. He confessed. I will never, ever doubt you again. I swear it on my life. I love you, Emma. God help me, I love you so much it's tearing me apart."
Emma froze. She looked up at him, her tear-filled brown eyes meeting his intense, desperate gaze. "You love me?"
"I loved you the moment I saw you sitting in the mud, making my children laugh," Gabriel confessed, his thumb wiping away her tears, smearing a mixture of dust and blood on her cheek. "Isabella's note told me not to let my dark world steal their light. But you... you brought the light back to me. You are my light, Emma."

Emma leaned up and kissed him, tasting salt and smoke, pouring all her forgiveness and fierce, unwavering love into the man who had finally let his walls crumble.
Around them, Gabriel’s loyal guards flooded the basement, securing the perimeter, but Gabriel didn't look away from Emma. For the first time in his life, the ruthless billionaire mafia boss realized that true power wasn't about the enemies you killed. It was about the family you protected.
