Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By dawn, the rain had stopped, leaving a heavy, thick fog hanging over the estate grounds.

Dario sat in his subterranean war room beneath the garage. The room was bathed in the cool blue glow of eight monitors displaying live security feeds from the estate perimeter, thermal tracking maps, and encrypted financial databases.

Beside him sat Marco, his elite cyber-tactician, who was tapping rapidly on a mechanical keyboard.

"We cracked the encryption on Elena Rossi’s flash drive, Boss," Marco said, leaning back in his chair. "It's worse than we thought."

Dario leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Show me."

Marco hit a key, and a massive spreadsheet filled the central screen. Red numbers, offshore account names, and shipping manifests scrolled past in a dizzying blur.

"Valenti isn't just laundering money through St. Catherine’s," Marco explained grimly. "He’s using the orphanage's international transport charters to move illegal firearms into the harbor. And look at this signature line."

Marco zoomed in on a legal document dated four months ago.

Dario’s eyes widened.

The co-signer on the transport manifest was not Marco Valenti.

It was Richard Vance—the District Attorney of New Jersey.

"Vance..." Dario growled, his fists clenching until his knuckles turned bone-white. "The man who led the investigation into Isabella’s car crash."

"He shut down the investigation within forty-eight hours because he was covering his own tracks," Marco said. "If this ledger goes public, the District Attorney, three city councilmen, and Marco Valenti’s entire upper hierarchy go to federal prison for the rest of their natural lives."

The door to the war room hissed open.

Claire walked in, holding a tray with two mugs of black coffee. She looked around the high-tech bunker in amazement before setting the tray down beside Dario.

"Sophia is awake," Claire said softly. "Mrs. Gable is making her pancakes in the kitchen."

Dario looked up, taking one of the coffee mugs. "Thank you."

Claire looked at the screen, her eyes fixing on Richard Vance’s name. "Is that... the District Attorney?"

"Yes," Dario said coldly. "The man who guaranteed my daughter's killer would never face justice."

Claire felt a chill run down her spine. "What are you going to do?"

"I am going to host a party," Dario replied, a dark, lethal smile touching his lips.

Claire blinked. "A party?"

"Tonight is the annual Police Athletic League Charity Gala at the Grand Plaza Hotel," Dario explained, taking a sip of his coffee. "District Attorney Vance is the guest of honor. Marco Valenti will be sitting at his head table."

Claire’s eyes widened in horror. "Dario, you can't go there! That’s suicide! The place will be crawling with Valenti’s men and police officers!"

"Which is precisely why Valenti won't expect me to walk through the front door," Dario said smoothly. He stood up, smoothing down his shirt. "I am going to deliver the ledger to the Federal Prosecutor live on stage in front of two hundred cameras."

Claire grabbed his arm. "And what happens when Valenti’s men open fire in a room full of civilians?!"

"They won't," Dario said, looking down at her. "Because before I walk onto that stage, Bruno will have executed a simultaneous raid on Valenti’s three primary armories across the city. By eight o'clock tonight, Marco Valenti will be completely bankrupt, stripped of his weapons, and surrounded by federal marshals."

Claire stared at him, her chest heaving. The sheer brilliance and audacity of his strategy was staggering. He wasn't just fighting back—he was dismantling an empire in a single evening.

"I’m coming with you," Claire said suddenly.

Dario’s dark brows shot up. "Absolutely not."

"I hold the legal guardianship papers for Sophia," Claire insisted, her chin rising. "If you hand that ledger to the federal prosecutor, someone needs to verify the origin of Elena Rossi’s files to establish chain of custody. Without my legal testimony, Vance’s defense lawyers will claim the files were planted by your syndicate!"

Dario stepped closer to her, his shadow falling over her face. "It is too dangerous, Claire. If anything happens to you—"

"If anything happens to you, Dario, Sophia has no one left!" Claire shouted, her voice echoing off the concrete walls of the bunker. "Isabella trusted me to finish this! I am not sitting in a bedroom sipping tea while you risk your life for my promise!"

Dario stared into her fierce green eyes. He saw no hesitation, no fear—only the unyielding, magnificent courage of a woman who would walk through hellfire for those she loved.

Slowly, Dario reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, his thumb brushing over her cheekbone.

"You are a terrifying woman, Claire Walsh," Dario whispered, his voice thick with an emotion he could no longer contain.

"I’ve been told," Claire whispered back, her breath hitching as his thumb traced the line of her lip.

May you like

"If you come," Dario murmured, his eyes dropping to her mouth before rising back to meet hers, "you wear armor. And you stay behind me at all times."

"Deal," Claire whispered.
