Chapter 6 - A Room with Yellow Curtains

Spring had arrived at the Moretti estate.

The dark, gloomy fortress that had once smelled of cold stone and fear was now filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming yellow roses, fresh paint, and the joyous sounds of a child’s laughter echoing through the wide hallways.

On the second floor, in the sunlit corner room overlooking the lush green gardens, the heavy dark drapes had been replaced by bright, cheerful yellow curtains that fluttered gently in the warm afternoon breeze.

Sophia sat on a fluffy white rug in the center of the room, surrounded by wooden bookshelves filled with storybooks, arranging a set of painted wooden dolls. Beside her sat a tiny, purring gray kitten with white paws—a gift from Dario for her eighth birthday.

Downstairs on the sun-drenched stone terrace, Dario stood by the marble balustrade, holding two cups of fresh lemonade.

He wore a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, dark trousers, and a soft, relaxed smile that had entirely erased the harsh, grim lines from his face.

The French doors opened, and Claire stepped out onto the terrace.

She looked breathtakingly radiant in a floral summer dress that caught the breeze, her auburn hair flowing softly over her shoulders. Her skin was glowing, her green eyes bright with an unshakeable peace.

Dario turned, handed her one of the glasses, and pulled her close against his side. Claire leaned her head comfortably against his shoulder, her arm wrapping around his waist.

"Sophia loves the cat," Claire laughed softly, sipping her lemonade. "She named him 'Barnaby.'"

"A fine name," Dario smiled, his thumb stroking her bare shoulder. "Though Bruno looked deeply offended when she tried to put a pink ribbon on his collar earlier."

Claire let out a warm, musical laugh that echoed across the quiet garden.

They stood together in peaceful silence for a long moment, watching the blue sky reflect off the calm waters of the estate fountain below.

"I went to see Isabella today," Dario said softly.

Claire looked up at him, her hand coming up to rest gently over his heart. "How was it?"

"It was quiet," Dario murmured, his eyes shining with a gentle, loving light. "The sun was shining on her stone. I brought her yellow roses."

He looked down into Claire’s green eyes, his grip on her waist tightening with a deep, reverent warmth.

"I told her that Sophia has her room with the yellow curtains," Dario whispered. "And I told her that I found the woman who saved my soul."

Claire’s breath caught in her throat. She set her glass down on the stone ledge, turning in his arms, her hands coming up to cup his sharp, handsome cheeks.

"You saved yourself, Dario," Claire whispered softly. "You just needed someone to remind you how much love you had left inside."

Dario looked down into her eyes—at the fierce, beautiful, incredible woman who had faced down mafia bosses, bullets, and her own past to bring light into his dark world.

He pulled her close, his mouth meeting hers in a deep, lingering, magnificent kiss that tasted of sweet summer, quiet peace, and a love that would never break.

"I love you, Claire," Dario murmured against her lips.

"I love you, Dario," Claire whispered back, leaning her forehead against his chest.

From the second-floor window above, the yellow curtains fluttered in the breeze, and the sound of Sophia’s happy song drifted out into the warm afternoon air—a song of a family reborn, a secret protected, and a love that had conquered the dark forever.
