Chapter 4 - The Gala of Snakes

The Grand Plaza Ballroom was an ocean of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and tailored tuxedos.
Halloway City’s elite—judges, politicians, police chiefs, and wealthy socialites—mingled under the dazzling lights while a fifteen-piece jazz band played smoothly near the stage.
At the central head table sat Marco Valenti.
He was a withered, hawk-faced man in his seventies with sharp, cruel eyes and a silver-tipped cane resting against his chair. Beside him sat District Attorney Richard Vance, a sleek, handsome man in his fifties with a polished smile that didn't reach his cold blue eyes.
"Is the Moretti girl’s file completely scrubbed?" Valenti asked in a low whisper, sipping his red wine.
"It’s done," District Attorney Vance replied smoothly, adjusting his bow tie. "The social worker, Claire Walsh, vanished from her apartment last night. My men are checking the bus stations. Once we locate her and the child, the ledger dies with them."
"Good," Valenti growled. "Dario Moretti is distracted by grief. He won't realize what hit him until my men take his harbor terminals tomorrow morning."
At that precise moment, the grand double doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open.
The jazz band faltered, the saxophone fading into a squeaking stop. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the three hundred guests as a collective gasp rippled through the hall.
Standing in the entryway was Dario Moretti.
He looked like an ancient god of vengeance returned to claim his due. He wore a flawless, custom-tailored black double-breasted tuxedo that accentuated his imposing height and lethal presence. His dark hair was combed back, his jaw was set in iron, and his storm-gray eyes burned with a terrifying, absolute authority.
On his arm walked Claire Walsh.
She was breathtaking. She wore a floor-length dress of deep crimson silk that hugged her curves, her auburn hair styled in an elegant updo, exposing the graceful line of her neck. Around her throat sat a collar of black diamonds—a Moretti family heirloom that Dario had placed around her neck himself an hour ago.
Behind them stepped Bruno and four of Dario’s most formidable guards, moving in a tight, disciplined wedge that made the venue's private security staff back away in absolute terror.
District Attorney Vance’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor.
Marco Valenti’s hand tightened around his silver cane until his knuckles turned yellow.
Dario guided Claire smoothly through the crowd, ignoring the whispers and camera flashes of the press. They walked straight toward the main stage, where Federal Prosecutor Marcus Sterling was standing near the microphone.
"Dario," Sterling said, stepping forward with a cautious frown. "This is a private charity event—"
"I am here to make a donation, Prosecutor Sterling," Dario’s deep baritone echoed through the hall, clear and commandingly loud.
He reached into his inner breast pocket, pulled out the silver flash drive wrapped in Elena Rossi’s original legal affidavits, and handed it directly to the Federal Prosecutor.
"What is this?" Sterling asked, frowning.
"That," Dario declared, turning to face the entire room, his eyes fixing directly onto Marco Valenti and Richard Vance, "is the master ledger of the Valenti extortion syndicate. It contains twenty years of offshore bribery records, illegal weapons trafficking manifests, and the murder orders for seven federal witnesses—including my daughter, Isabella Moretti."
A wave of shock exploded through the ballroom! Journalists rushed forward, camera flashes exploding like lightning strikes in a storm!
District Attorney Vance leapt from his chair, his face pale as death. "He’s lying! Security! Arrest this man! He’s a known criminal enterprise leader!"
"Read page forty-two, Prosecutor Sterling," Claire’s clear, bell-like voice rang out across the stage as she stepped up beside Dario. "It bears District Attorney Vance’s personal digital signature, authorizing the transport of illegal firearms through St. Catherine’s Orphanage!"
"You little bitch!" Vance screamed, reaching into his jacket—
CLICK.
Before Vance’s hand could clear his lapel, Bruno stepped up, slamming a heavy steel handcuffed bracelet around Vance’s wrist, pinning him against the head table.
At that exact second, the massive glass windows overlooking the hotel garden exploded inward!
Three of Valenti’s undercover gunmen dropped from the ceiling rafters, weapons raised, aiming directly at Claire!
"DOWN!" Dario roared.
He wrapped his massive body around Claire, throwing her to the marble floor, shielding her entirely with his own frame as gunfire erupted through the ballroom!
Guests screamed, diving under tables as crystal chandeliers shattered overhead!
Dario pulled his custom 9mm from his shoulder holster, rolling onto his back, firing four rapid, precise shots upward!
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
The three attackers hit the floor with heavy thuds, their weapons clattering across the marble.
Dario scrambled up, pulling Claire into his arms, checking her face frantically. "Are you hit?! Claire! Look at me!"
Claire gasped for air, her hands clutching his tux lapels, her eyes wide as she looked into his panicked face. "I'm... I'm okay! I'm hit with glass, but I'm okay!"
Suddenly, Marco Valenti stepped out from behind the head table, holding a small, silver palm-pistol aimed directly at Claire’s heart!
"If I go down, Moretti," Valenti spat, his old face twisted in unhinged rage, "the girl’s protector dies first!"
Valenti squeezed the trigger—
BANG!
A single gunshot echoed through the hall.
Valenti froze. His eyes widened in disbelief as a tiny red hole appeared in the center of his forehead. He slumped forward, crashing over the head table, his silver cane clattering against the marble floor.
Behind him stood Federal Prosecutor Sterling, holding a smoking service revolver pulled from his security guard’s holster.
"Federal agents are in the lobby, Moretti," Sterling said calmly, lowering his weapon. "Take the girl and get out of here before the SWAT team locks the building down."

Dario looked at the Federal Prosecutor, giving him a single, solemn nod of respect.
He scooped Claire up into his arms, holding her tight against his chest as Bruno and his men formed a human shield, clearing a path through the chaotic ballroom out toward the rear exit.
