Chapter 1 - The Sirens of Andalusia

The crystal chandelier from Seville caught the amber light of the candles as a sudden, sharp wail pierced the heavy, suffocating silence of the Salvatierra dining room. The guests—a collection of Andalusia’s most elite aristocracy, corporate lawyers, and sycophantic family members—froze in terror.
Ruby’s pristine, painted smile shattered instantly. The triumph in her eyes vanished, replaced by a sudden, cold panic as she stared down at me. My cheek was pressed against the shattered remnants of the porcelain plate, warm blood mixing with the dark, simulated bile I had forced up to sell the illusion of a lethal poisoning.
“What... what did you do?” Ruby hissed, her voice trembling beneath her breath as she leaned down, her manicured fingers digging into the lace of my sleeve. “The dose was calculated. It was supposed to stop your heart in three minutes!”
I didn’t flinch. I slowly turned my head, my eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying, unblinking clarity. The antidote I had ingested twenty minutes before the dinner began was currently lining my stomach, neutralizing the organic neurotoxin she had so carefully slipped into my vintage reserve.
Before Ruby could pull away, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the grand foyer. Not one, but half a dozen sharp, rhythmic footsteps.
“Open the doors!” a deep, authoritative voice commanded outside.
Adrián bolted upright from his chair, his face entirely drained of color. His wineglass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the Persian rug. “No... that’s impossible. I cleared the security protocols. The financial routing to Gibraltar isn't scheduled for final clearance until midnight!”
“You underestimated my father, Adrián,” I whispered, lifting myself off the table with a slow, deliberate grace. I wiped the dark stain from my chin with the back of my hand, my voice ringing out clearly across the silent hall. “Don Mateo Salvatierra never trusted a man who checked his watch more often than his conscience.”

The double mahogany doors burst open. Standing in the threshold was not local county police—they could be bought, and Ruby knew it. Instead, standing tall in midnight-blue tactical uniforms emblazoned with the gold crest of the Unidad Central Operativa (UCO)—Spain’s elite federal anti-corruption and financial crimes division—was Commander Alejandro Vance.
And behind him walked a man Ruby thought she would never see in Spain again: the chief forensic auditor of the Swiss National Bank.
