Chapter 2 - The Gibraltar Ledger

“Secure the exits! Nobody leaves this room!” Commander Vance’s voice echoed off the vaulted ceilings.
Pandemonium erupted among the guests. Aunts began to weep, cousins scrambled backward toward the French doors, and lawyers hastily zipped their briefcases, desperate to distance themselves from the impending storm. But the UCO operatives moved with clockwork precision, blocking every avenue of escape.
Ruby backed away until her spine hit the mahogany sideboard, her red dress rustling frantically. “This is a mistake! We are the Salvatierra family! This woman—Morgana—she’s unstable, she’s hallucinating—”
“Silence, Ms. Vance,” Commander Vance said coldly, stepping into the warm glow of the Seville chandelier. He pulled a heavy leather-bound tablet from his tactical vest and tossed it onto the table, right beside my bloodied plate. “We aren't here just for an attempted homicide investigation. We are here pursuant to federal warrant 489-B, charging Ruby Salvatierra and Adrián Delgado with corporate espionage, wire fraud, identity theft, and the systematic embezzlement of forty-four million euros from the Salvatierra Holdings trust.”
Adrián stumbled forward, raising his hands defensively. “You can’t prove that! Those accounts are private! They’re protected under international privacy laws in Gibraltar!”
“Gibraltar cooperative treaties were signed and updated last month, Mr. Delgado,” a calm, accented voice spoke from behind Commander Vance. The chief forensic auditor stepped forward, holding a secure encrypted terminal. “Your shell companies—Meridian Holdings and Seville Capital—were legally unmasked the moment your signature was authenticated on the secondary transfer protocol. A protocol, I might add, that was digitally monitored by Don Mateo himself before his passing.”
I stood up fully, smoothing down the front of my dress. The cut on my cheek stung, but the pain was nothing compared to the intoxicating rush of vindication.
I looked across the table at Adrián—the man who had played the role of the devoted fiancé while secretly conspiring with my adoptive sister to strip me of my inheritance and my life.
“You thought my father was losing his mind in his final months, didn't you?” I asked softly, stepping toward him. “You thought his failing health meant his empire was up for grabs.”

Adrián stared at me, his eyes wide with a dawning, crushing horror. “You knew. You knew about the affair from the very beginning.”
“I knew everything, Adrián,” I replied. “And I let you walk right into the trap your own greed built.”
