PART 2 — The Paper Trail of Terror

Four hours later, the initial trauma surgery was complete. Evelyn had been stabilized and moved to a private room in the Intensive Care Unit, her jaw wired shut and a row of dark stitches tracing her swollen lip. She was asleep, under heavy sedation to manage the agonizing pain.

Marcus sat in a vinyl chair in the corner of the room, a laptop resting on his knees. Sitting opposite him was Sarah Lin, a no-nonsense private investigator and former military police officer whom Marcus had hired three hours prior. She dropped a thick, heavy manila folder onto the bedside table.

"You were right to call me, Marcus," Sarah said, her voice tight with professional disgust. "While you were deployed, Vanessa wasn't just managing the household. She completely severed Evelyn's access to her own widow's pension. I ran a quick financial audit on your joint accounts."

Marcus leaned forward, his eyes locking onto the printed bank statements Sarah pulled from the folder. "What did she do, Sarah?"

"The $4,000 you sent home every month for 'household maintenance and Evelyn’s care' never touched your mother," Sarah explained, pointing a pen at a series of massive electronic transfers. "The moment the money hit the account, Vanessa routed it into a shell corporation registered under her maiden name. She used your deployment blood-money to fund a high-stakes online gambling addiction. She owes over $90,000 to a private private lending syndicate operating out of Charlotte."

"My god," Marcus whispered, burying his face in his calloused hands. "And my mother?"

"Evelyn discovered the empty accounts three months ago," Sarah continued, her eyes shifting to the sleeping old woman. "She threatened to call the base command and report Vanessa for financial fraud. That is when the lockdown started. Vanessa confiscated Evelyn's phone, locked her in the basement whenever you called, and used physical violence to keep her compliant. The bucket and the mop you saw in the kitchen? Vanessa was forcing your seventy-year-old mother to scrub the floors on her knees while she berated her."

The door to the ICU room clicked open slowly. Vanessa stepped inside. She had changed out of the wrinkled red dress into a modest, soft pink sweater. Her eyes were red and puffy, her face a masterclass in performative grief.

"Marcus, honey," Vanessa sobbed, stepping toward him with her arms extended. "The police came to the house. They asked so many horrible questions. You have to tell them it was a misunderstanding. Your mother has been getting so confused lately... she became aggressive, she grabbed a kitchen knife, and I had to defend myself. I swear, I only pushed her away!"

Marcus slowly rose from his chair, his imposing, muscular frame towering over her. The performative tears dried up on Vanessa's cheeks instantly as she saw the sheer, unadulterated venom radiating from her husband's eyes.

"The camera, Vanessa," Marcus said, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that filled the small room.

Vanessa blinked, her voice faltering. "What... what camera?"

"The digital baby monitor I set up in the kitchen corner before I deployed so I could watch Ma cook her favorite recipes," Marcus said, pointing a finger directly at her face. "The one you thought was unplugged. It records audio and motion directly to a secure military cloud server. I just watched the entire feed from this afternoon. I saw you throw her to the tiles. I heard you tell her that if she spoke to me, you'd make sure she never woke up. Pack your things, Vanessa. Because by tomorrow morning, you won't have a home anymore."
