PART 3 — The Forensic Sweep

By the following evening, the local police department had executed a full forensic search warrant on the Hale residence. Marcus stood in the center of his living room, watching two forensic technicians scan the dark hardwood floors with blue light devices. The house smelled of chemical clean-up and stale fear—the remnants of Vanessa’s frantic attempt to erase her crimes before Marcus arrived.
Detective Lin stepped through the front door, carrying a clear plastic evidence bag containing a heavily dented iron skillet and a torn, blood-stained house dress.
"We found these hidden behind the insulation panels in the basement crawlspace, Sergeant," Lin said, her expression grim. "The DNA on the skillet matches your mother's blood type. Vanessa didn't just use her fists. She beat your mother with kitchen utensils whenever the old woman tried to scream for help."
Marcus closed his eyes, his fists clenching so tightly that his knuckles popped like small firecrackers. "Where is she now?"
"She’s currently locked in an interrogation room at the precinct," Lin replied. "Her lawyer is trying to secure a bail hearing, claiming she has no prior criminal record and poses no flight risk. But with the financial audit you provided and the digital cloud footage from the kitchen, the district attorney is upgrading the charges to attempted first-degree murder, elderly abuse, and grand larceny."
"She cannot get bail, Detective," Marcus said, turning to look out the front window at the quiet suburban street. "The lending syndicate she owes money to... Sarah found out they've been threatening her. If she gets out, she will either flee the state or try to silence my mother permanently before the trial starts."
"She won't get the chance," Lin assured him. "The judge assigned to the preliminary hearing is Margaret Cho. She has a zero-tolerance policy for elderly exploitation. But Marcus... you need to prepare your mother. The defense team is going to try to paint her as mentally incompetent to invalidate her testimony."

"My mother’s mind is sharper than any blade in this house," Marcus said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "She kept a hidden diary. Sarah found it tucked inside the lining of an old winter coat in the attic. Months of entries detailing every single assault, every dollar stolen, and every threat made against my life if she spoke out. Vanessa thought she was dealing with a helpless old woman. She has no idea she was documenting her own execution."
Marcus walked down the hallway to his mother’s room, picking up a small framed photograph of his father from the dresser. The house felt empty, stripped of its warmth, but the foundations were still solid. He would rebuild it, block by block, but first, he had to ensure the monster who had infested it was permanently locked behind steel bars.
