PART 4 — The Showdown in Court room 4B

The county courthouse was a grand, imposing structure of grey granite and polished marble. Marcus arrived wearing his full military dress uniform, his medals glinting under the harsh corridor lights. He pushed his mother’s wheelchair slowly, her fragile form wrapped in a thick wool blanket, her wired jaw making it impossible for her to smile, but her eyes—bright and resolute—fixed on the heavy oak doors of Courtroom 4B.
Sitting at the defense table, wearing a crisp black blazer and a white silk blouse, was Vanessa. Her slick defense attorney, Richard Sterling, whispered in her ear as she nodded with a look of practiced innocence.
"All rise for Judge Margaret Cho," the bailiff bellowed.
Judge Cho, a stern woman with sharp eyes and a reputation that struck terror into the hearts of local criminals, took her seat at the elevated bench. She adjusted her glasses and looked down at the documents before her.
"We are here for the preliminary evidentiary hearing in the matter of the State vs. Vanessa Hale," Judge Cho announced. "The defense has filed a motion to dismiss the charges of attempted murder, claiming a lack of physical intent. Mr. Sterling, you may present your argument."
Sterling stood up, smoothing his tie with an arrogant confidence. "Your Honor, this is a tragic case of domestic disharmony exacerbated by the severe mental decline of the elderly victim, Evelyn Hale. My client, Vanessa, was a devoted caretaker who faced constant, aggressive outbursts from a woman suffering from undiagnosed dementia. The incident in the kitchen was a unfortunate defensive reaction to an assault initiated by the old woman herself. The injuries, while regrettable, do not constitute premeditated intent."
Marcus sat perfectly still at the prosecution table, his hand resting gently on his mother’s shoulder, feeling the slight tremor of her frame.
"The state has a counter-presentation, Your Honor," the Assistant District Attorney said, standing up and sliding a thumb drive across the clerk's desk. "We would like to introduce the digital cloud data recovered from the secure server of Sergeant Marcus Hale."
Vanessa’s lawyer jumped to his feet. "Objection! This footage was captured without my client's explicit consent within a private residence!"
"The objection is overruled, Mr. Sterling," Judge Cho said, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. "The security system was installed by the primary homeowner, Sergeant Hale, prior to his deployment. Play the media."
The courtroom lights dimmed, and the massive projection screen flickered to life. The audio was the first thing that hit the room—a sharp, terrifying slap, followed by Evelyn's frail voice begging for her medication. Then, the visual appeared: Vanessa, her face distorted with a monstrous, feral rage, grabbing the old woman by her grey hair, slamming her face onto the tiled floor, and methodically punching her in the mouth until her teeth shattered across the room.

"Drink the bleach, you old hag," Vanessa's recorded voice boomed through the speakers. "Clean the floor with your clothes or I’ll make sure Marcus gets a body bag instead of a wife when he comes home."
The silence that followed the video was deafening. Several people in the gallery gasped, covering their mouths. Vanessa’s face went entirely white, her aristocratic composure dissolving into a look of sheer, animalistic terror. Her own defense lawyer sat down slowly, pulling his briefcase away from her as if she were contaminated.
