Chapter 4 - The Threat in the ShadowsWhile Maeve spent the next two weeks overseeing the transformation of Saltline—hiring back her former coworkers with fair wages and full medical benefits—a darker storm was gathering over the Colazzo territory.

The attack on Cecily hadn't been a random act of street violence. It was a calculated strike by the Vane family—a rival syndicate operating out of Chicago that had been trying to seize control of the Brooklyn shipping terminals for over a year.

Late one evening, inside the glass-walled study of his Bedford estate, Rafe stood staring out at the rain-drenched pine forest, holding an unlit cigar.

Marco stepped into the room, closing the door quietly behind him.

"We interrogated the attacker from the restaurant, Boss," Marco reported, his tone grim. "His name is Vance. He was paid fifty thousand dollars by Julian Vane to target Cecily. The goal was to force you into a territorial negotiation while you were compromised by family grief."

Rafe’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles in his cheek twitched. "Julian Vane thinks he can touch my blood and live to enjoy his empire?"

"There's more," Marco added hesitantly. "Julian knows about Maeve. His informants saw her step in front of the baton. Word on the street is that Vane realizes Maeve is now under your personal protection. He thinks she's your weakness."

Rafe turned around slowly, his hazel eyes burning with a dark, terrifying fire. "She is not my weakness, Marco. She is the only clean thing left in this city. If Julian Vane so much as looks toward her restaurant, I will burn his entire family business to the ground."

At that moment, the door opened softly.

Maeve walked in, wearing a simple cream sweater and black trousers, holding a leather folder containing Saltline’s new employee contracts. She froze when she saw the deadly tension in the room.

"Am I interrupting something?" she asked softly.

Marco bowed his head respectfully. "No, Ms. Donovan. I was just leaving." He stepped out into the hallway, pulling the double doors shut behind him.

Maeve walked over to the desk, setting the folder down. She looked at Rafe’s tense, rigid posture, taking a slow step toward him.

"It's about the attack, isn't it?" she asked quietly. "The men who tried to hurt Cecily."

Rafe looked down at her, his expression softening slightly, though the dark worry in his eyes remained. "You shouldn't be involved in this, Maeve. My world is dangerous, violent, and unforgiving. I brought you into my home to protect you, but my presence puts a target on your back."

Maeve walked straight up to him, stopping just inches from his chest. She reached up with her uninjured hand, gently touching his arm.

"I spent my whole life being afraid, Rafe," she said softly, looking dead into his hazel eyes. "Afraid of hospital bills, afraid of losing my job, afraid of the dark. But when I looked at that man holding the weapon two weeks ago, I realized something."

"What?" Rafe whispered, his breath catching in his throat.

"I’m not afraid of your world," Maeve said firmly. "Because the man who controls it is the same man who stayed up all night holding my hand when I was feverish in that bed."

Rafe stared at her, his heart hammering against his ribs like a wild drum. Without another word, he reached out, his long fingers cupping the back of her neck, pulling her close as his lips met hers in a deep, fierce, and desperate kiss that carried all the unspoken passion and fierce protection he had carried since the night they met.
