Chapter 5 - The Siege at the DocksThe final confrontation came three days before Finn’s scheduled heart surgery.

Julian Vane had made his move—not at the restaurant, but at the medical supply terminal near Pier 42, where a shipment of specialized pediatric surgical equipment bound for Mount Sinai Hospital was being held hostage by Vane's armed mercenaries.

It was a cold, ruthless message: Hand over the Brooklyn dock leases, or the surgery doesn't happen.

At midnight, three black Suburbans pulled up to the dark, fog-drenched loading bay of Pier 42.

Rafe stepped out into the rain, wearing a long black leather coat, flanked by Marco and twelve heavily armed Colazzo enforcers.

Standing fifty yards away under the harsh yellow sodium lights of the warehouse was Julian Vane—a sleek, razor-thin man with cold grey eyes, wearing a gray cashmere coat, holding a glass of bourbon while six mercenaries stood guard around him.

"You're late, Rafe," Julian sneered, blowing a cloud of cigar smoke into the damp night air. "I thought you cared about that little girl's brother. The surgical team at Mount Sinai is waiting, but without these heart-lung bypass pumps..."

He gestured toward the crates piled behind him.

Rafe walked forward slowly, stopping ten feet from Julian. He didn't look at the crates. He didn't look at the mercenaries. He looked dead into Julian’s eyes with pure, unadulterated executioner's focus.

"You made three mistakes, Julian," Rafe said smoothly, his deep voice slicing through the sound of the crashing waves beneath the pier.

Julian raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Oh? Tell me."

"First, you sent a amateur with a steel pipe to touch my sister," Rafe said, taking one slow step forward. "Second, you tried to hold a nine-year-old boy's life hostage to bargain for shipping lanes."

Julian’s smirk faltered slightly as he noticed movement in the shadows along the warehouse roofline.

"And third?" Julian asked, his hand reaching toward his coat pocket.

"Third," Rafe whispered, pulling a silver detonator from his pocket, "you thought I brought my men here to negotiate."

BOOM.

A series of small, controlled explosive charges detonated along the rear doors of the warehouse, sending a wave of blinding smoke and concussive sound ripping through the pier.

Colazzo snipers posted on the surrounding cranes fired simultaneously, dropping Julian’s mercenaries into the wet concrete before they could draw their weapons.

Julian stumbled backward, dropping his bourbon glass, scrambling toward his vehicle in sheer terror.

Before he could reach the door handle, Rafe crossed the distance like a shadow, grabbing Julian by his coat collar and slamming him face-first against the hood of the SUV with a sickening thud.

Rafe pulled Julian’s head back by his hair, placing the cold barrel of his silver revolver against the side of his neck.

"Please... Rafe, wait!" Julian shrieked, his arrogant composure completely shattered into pathetic whimpers. "Take the docks! Take the equipment! I’ll leave the state! I swear to God I’ll never come back!"

Rafe leaned down, his voice cold enough to freeze blood.

"If I ever hear your name spoken within a hundred miles of my family or Maeve Donovan," Rafe whispered, "I won't send my men. I will hunt you down myself."

Rafe shoved Julian away like a piece of trash. "Get him out of my sight. Hand him to the federal authorities for maritime extortion."

May you like

Marco stepped forward, slapping steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists and dragging him toward the waiting police cruisers that were already speeding down the pier with blue lights flashing through the rain.

Rafe turned toward the warehouse, signaling his men. "Load those medical crates onto the Mount Sinai transport. Right now."
