Chapter 6 - The Unbroken HeartOne Month Later.

The warm morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the private recovery room on the ninth floor of Mount Sinai Pediatric Center.
The room smelled of fresh flowers, fruit baskets, and warm vanilla tea.
On the bed sat Finn, looking healthy, vibrant, and full of energy, holding a brand-new digital tablet while playing a racing game with Cecily, who was sitting on the edge of his bed laughing uncontrollably.
"I won again!" Finn cheered, tossing his arms into the air. "Cecily, you're terrible at drifting!"
"Hey! The controls on this track are sticky!" Cecily protested dramatically, pulling Finn into a warm hug and ruffling his hair.
Maeve stood near the window, watching them with a radiant, tearful smile. Her left arm was entirely healed, free of the sling, and her face held a deep, glowing peace that had been absent for nine long years.
Dr. Harrison walked out of the adjoining examination room, holding a digital clip chart, looking over at Maeve with a warm, professional smile.
"His heart rhythm is ninety-eight percent stable, Ms. Donovan," Dr. Harrison declared proudly. "The arterial repair was a complete success. Finn is fully cleared to go home today."
Maeve let out a long, shaky breath, covering her face with her hands as tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled down her cheeks.
A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around her from behind.
Rafe stood beside her, pulling her against his broad chest, resting his chin softly against her temple. He wore a simple charcoal dress shirt, looking relaxed, peaceful, and entirely devoted.
"He's going to grow up strong, Maeve," Rafe whispered softly into her ear. "He's going to run, play baseball, and go to college."
Maeve turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his waist, looking up into his dark hazel eyes—the eyes that had once frightened an entire city, but now held nothing but warmth and protective devotion for her.
"Thank you, Rafe," she whispered, her voice trembling with deep emotion. "You gave him his life."
"No, Maeve," Rafe corrected her gently, his long fingers tenderly brushing a dark strand of hair from her cheek. "You saved my sister, you brought light into my dark home, and you gave me a reason to build something clean. You saved all of us."
That evening, the grand opening of the newly renovated Saltline Restaurant took place under clear, starlit skies in Manhattan.
The front facade featured warm brass lamps, glowing mahogany doors, and a sleek new sign bearing the name: DONOVAN’S AT SALTLINE.
Inside, the floor was filled with happy guests, ambient laughter, and immaculate service led by floor staff who were treated with dignity, respect, and fair wages.
Standing on the private outdoor terrace overlooking the illuminated city skyline, Maeve stood in a stunning emerald silk dress, holding a glass of sparkling water.
Rafe walked out onto the terrace, holding two small leather keys, and set them gently into her open hand.
Maeve looked down at the keys. "What are these?"
"The deed to a brownstone two blocks from here," Rafe smiled softly, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close against his side. "It has four bedrooms, a big backyard for Finn, and a library."
Maeve looked up into his eyes, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking across her face.
"Is there room for a mafia boss who needs a quiet place to eat dinner?" she teased softly.
Rafe chuckled—a deep, rich sound that echoed over the quiet terrace—and leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a sweet, lingering kiss under the starlight.

"As long as the waitress doesn't charge me for the water," Rafe whispered against her lips.
Maeve laughed, holding his hand tightly as they stood together, looking out over the bright, beautiful city that was finally theirs.
