Chapter 3 - Unraveling the WebWithin minutes, the glittering social facade of Villa Moretti was stripped away, revealing its true nature as an impregnable fortress. The heavy iron gates at the perimeter were locked tight, shutting out the rainy Milan night, and armed patrols swarmed the grounds. The twelve crime families were sequestered in the east wing dining hall under heavy guard, effectively held hostage while Alessandro initiated a brutal internal purge.

I sat in Alessandro’s private, book-lined study, clutching a warm cup of tea that a sympathetic housekeeper had brought me. Emma was curled up asleep on a velvet sofa in the corner, her thumb tucked in her mouth, her faithful blue rabbit clutched tightly against her chest.
The heavy mahogany door clicked open, and Alessandro walked in. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling up his white dress shirt sleeves to reveal forearms corded with muscle and faint scars from past turf wars. He looked exhausted, the lines around his eyes etched deep with betrayal and lingering rage.
He poured himself a glass of neat bourbon, tossed it back in a single gulp, and turned to face me.
“I’m sorry for the chaos tonight, Elena,” he said softly, using my first name for the first time. “And I am deeply sorry for what Vivian did to you. She will never step foot in this house again.”
“You don't owe me an apology for her, Mr. Moretti,” I said, keeping my voice firm, though my hands still shook slightly around the ceramic mug. “You owe me an explanation. You said Lucas didn't die in that fire. How do you know that? If he’s alive, where has he been for two years?”
Alessandro walked over to a heavy oak desk, picked up a thick, leather-bound dossier, and tossed it gently onto the coffee table before me.
“Open it,” he instructed quietly.
I hesitated for a moment, my heart pounding against my ribs, before lifting the cover. Inside were financial records, grainy satellite photographs, medical charts, and a series of encrypted internal security memos bearing the Moretti family crest.
“Lucas wasn't just an ordinary accountant for our shipping firm,” Alessandro explained, leaning against the edge of the desk, watching me closely. “He was my most trusted financial advisor. Five years ago, he discovered a massive, multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme bleeding our maritime accounts dry. He traced the ledger directly to my cousin, Marco, and a rival faction within the syndicate.”
My breath caught. “He found out Marco was stealing from you?”
“Worse,” Alessandro’s jaw clenched. “Marco wasn't just stealing—he was selling our logistics data to an international task force, framing Lucas as the inside mole to cover his own tracks. When Lucas refused to take the fall, Marco staged that warehouse explosion to silence him permanently.”
“Then... why didn't Lucas come home to us?” Tears spilled over my eyelashes, hot and fast. “If he survived, why would he leave us to suffer in poverty for two years? Why let me mourn him?”
“Because Marco threatened your lives,” Alessandro said grimly. “The night of the bombing, Marco’s men intercepted Lucas before he could reach your apartment. They gave him a simple ultimatum: walk away into total obscurity, assume a false identity overseas, and never contact his wife or daughter again—or watch Marco’s enforcers execute you both on our front doorstep.”
The room seemed to spin around me. The grief, the struggle, the cold lonely nights working double shifts at diners and scrubbing rich people's floors—all of it had been orchestrated by a greedy, parasitic coward hiding behind a family name.
“Where is Marco now?” I asked, my voice dropping into a register so cold and hard it surprised even myself.
Alessandro’s lips curved into a dangerous, razor-thin smile. “He’s currently tied to a chair in the basement armoring room, waiting for me to finish reviewing his ledgers. But before I deal with him permanently, Elena... there is something else you need to know.”
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a clean, sealed manila envelope, sliding it across the table toward me.
“Lucas didn't just vanish into thin air. Three months ago, my private intelligence network picked up a coded signal originating from a secure offshore bank in Zurich—a signal using the exact encryption key Lucas and I created when we were kids. He’s been hiding in plain sight, building an airtight case against Marco and the corrupted council members, waiting for the precise moment to strike.”

I stared at the envelope, my hands trembling as I picked it up. “He’s... he’s alive? In Zurich?”
“Not anymore,” Alessandro said quietly, standing up straight. “He knew tonight’s gathering at Villa Moretti was the night Marco planned to finalize a hostile takeover of the syndicate. Lucas is already in Milan. He’s outside the gates right now.”
