Chapter 4 - The Reunion in the ShadowsThe rain was lashing violently against the reinforced glass windows of Villa Moretti, turning the sprawling courtyard into a watery mirror reflecting the amber security lights.

Alessandro led me down through the subterranean service corridors, past the heavy steel doors of the armory where Marco was being held, out toward the secondary exit leading to the private motor court. Emma was still fast asleep in Alessandro’s arms, her small head resting peacefully against his broad shoulder, completely unaware that her entire universe was about to be upended.
As the heavy metal door swung open, the biting chill of the night air rushed in, carrying the scent of wet asphalt and pine.
Standing beneath the concrete overhang, drenched in rain, wearing a dark trench coat with the collar turned up against the wind, was a man I thought I would never see again in this lifetime.
Lucas.
He looked thinner, harder, with new scars mapping the contours of his face and silver threading through his dark hair. But those eyes—the warm, hazel eyes I had fallen in love with a decade ago—were unmistakably his.
When he saw us step out of the doorway, his breath caught. He froze, taking a slow, disbelieving step forward.
“Elena...” he choked out, his voice cracking violently.
I couldn't move. My legs felt like lead, and a massive wave of conflicting emotions—profound relief, overwhelming joy, and a sharp, stinging anger over the years of needless agony—crashed over me all at once.
“You coward,” I whispered, my voice trembling as tears mixed with the rain on my cheeks. “You let us think you were dead.”
Lucas rushed forward, dropping to his knees before me, grabbing my hands. They were ice-cold, shaking uncontrollably.
“I had no choice, El,” he sobbed, pressing my knuckles desperately against his forehead. “If I stayed, Marco would have killed you and Emma before the sun came up. I had to play dead to keep you invisible. Every single day for two years, every second of my existence, was a living hell spent staring at your photograph, dying a thousand deaths so you could live.”
I looked down at him, seeing the profound torment etched into every line of his face, and the anger inside me slowly fractured. I dropped to my knees in the wet gravel, pulling him into my arms, burying my face in his damp coat as we wept together in the rain.
A gentle cough broke our embrace.
We looked up. Alessandro stood a few feet away, shielding sleeping Emma from the downpour with his own body. He looked down at Lucas with a complicated mix of brotherly affection and hardened resolve.
“It’s a touching reunion, my friend,” Alessandro said dryly, though his own eyes were suspiciously bright. “But we have unfinished business inside. Marco is waiting, and the council is still downstairs waiting to see who survives this night.”

Lucas wiped his face with the back of his hand, standing up and pulling me up with him. He looked at Alessandro, his expression hardening into absolute steel.
“Let’s go finish it,” Lucas said.
