Chapter 2 - The Audit of Souls

The air in the fourteenth-floor office became instantly unbreathable.

Derek Walsh stared at the platinum badge, his mouth hanging open like a landed fish. His knees buckled slightly, and he had to grab the edge of a cubicle wall to keep from collapsing onto the floor. "C-Carter? Logan... Carter? Harrison’s son?"

Paula Simmons dropped her tablet onto her desk with a loud crash. Her hands began to shake so violently she had to tuck them beneath her thighs.

The rest of the floor—the thirty quiet, overworked, bullied analysts and project coordinators—sat frozen in their seats, staring in absolute, stunned silence at the man they had known for three weeks as "the quiet temp."

Logan looked around the room, his icy grey eyes sweeping over every face until they landed on Mei Santos, who was trembling in her seat.

"Mei," Logan said gently, his tone softening for a fraction of a second. "Please step away from your desk. You and Ruth, come stand over here by the executive lift."

Mei looked at Ruth. Ruth, her eyes wide with shock but realizing instantly that the universe had just handed them an extraordinary miracle, grabbed Mei’s arm and guided her toward the safety of Logan’s security detail.

"Omar," Logan called out. "Bring your black notebooks."

Omar Bell didn't hesitate. He grabbed three thick leather-bound notebooks from his drawer, walked past Derek without giving him a single glance, and stood beside Ruth and Mei.

Logan turned his gaze back to Vanessa, Derek, and Paula.

"Three weeks ago," Logan began, his voice echoing off the concrete pillars, "I walked onto this floor under an assumed name. I wanted to see how the blood pumping through my father's company actually flowed. I wanted to see who built this firm... and who was bleeding it dry."

Logan stepped closer to Vanessa, who was shrinking back against her glass wall.

"I watched you give Derek credit for a 200-page vendor audit that I rebuilt line by line," Logan said softly. "I watched Paula alter meeting timestamps to make Omar look incompetent when he questioned a three-million-dollar inventory shortfall. I watched you threaten Mei with termination when she refused to sign off on a falsified compliance document."

"M-Mr. Carter," Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking as sweat broke out across her forehead, ruining her carefully applied makeup. "It... it was a management strategy! We were testing you! We test all temporary associates to see how they handle stress—"

"Quiet," Logan said.

It wasn't a shout. It was a single, icy syllable that cut off her words like a guillotine.

"You didn't test me, Vanessa. You framed me," Logan continued. "You used my access credentials to process a forty-two million dollar fraudulent transfer to an offshore entity named Aegis Holdings Ltd. in the Cayman Islands. You thought you were setting up a temporary associate who would disappear into the wind, carrying the blame for your theft."

"That's a lie!" Derek yelled, his voice shrill with panic. "We didn't transfer anything! You have no proof!"

Logan glanced at Arthur Sterling. "Arthur. Bring up the master feed."

Arthur tapped an encrypted tablet. Instantly, the massive, sixty-inch television screens hanging in the center of the office—which usually displayed global stock tickers—lit up.

On the screens appeared a real-time, high-definition recording of Derek Walsh’s desktop from two hours ago.

The video clearly showed Derek logging into the core server using Logan’s stolen associate ID, manually overriding the compliance flag, and approving the transfer to Aegis Holdings—while Paula Simmons stood behind him, reading bank routing numbers off a slip of paper.

Derek’s face went completely grey. He staggered backward, his breathing fast and shallow.

"We have four hundred hours of high-definition screen recordings, keystroke logs, and audio captures from the hidden mics installed in the executive ceiling framework two months ago," Logan explained, stepping into Vanessa’s personal space. "Every insult you whispered. Every bribe you divided. Every career you destroyed to protect your little syndicate. We have it all."

"Logan... please," Vanessa wept, dropping her haughty demeanor entirely, falling onto her knees on the stained carpet right in front of him. "Please! I've been with Harrison Global for eleven years! I made a mistake! Derek convinced me—it was Derek’s idea!"

"You witch!" Derek screamed, lunging toward her. "You took sixty percent of the cut! You said Harrison was dying and nobody was watching the floor!"

Two of Arthur’s security guards stepped between them instantly, grabbing Derek by his arms and pinning him against a pillar with crushing force.

"Paula Simmons," Logan said, turning to the terrified document manager. "You altered twenty-six personnel files over the last three years to prevent honest employees from receiving promotions, driving them to resign so you could fill those positions with people you could blackmail."

Paula closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face, unable to speak.

Logan walked back toward the center of the floor, standing tall before the entire room. His presence was overwhelming, a titan towering over the ruins of a corrupt kingdom.

"Three hours ago," Logan announced, his voice carrying to every corner of the room, "you three stood by those glass doors, laughed at a man carrying a cardboard box, and thought you had won."

He pulled Mia’s drawing out of his suit pocket, unfolded it carefully, and held it up so Vanessa could see the purple crayon letters: DADDY CAN FIX BIG THINGS.

"My daughter gave me this drawing for luck this morning," Logan said softly, his eyes burning with absolute, righteous fury. "I told her I was going to work to fix big things. And I never make a promise to my daughter that I don't keep."

He refolded the drawing and placed it back over his heart.

"Arthur," Logan commanded. "The federal prosecutors and the SEC enforcement team are waiting in the main lobby. Bring them up. Hand over the hard drives, the keystroke logs, and the bank trace files."

"Understood, Mr. Carter," Arthur replied.

"And Arthur?" Logan added, looking down at Vanessa, Derek, and Paula. "Make sure they carry their personal belongings out of this building in cardboard boxes... while the press records every single step."
