Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Siege

While federal agents were placing handcuffs on Vanessa, Derek, and Paula on the fourteenth floor, a very different kind of storm was brewing on the fifty-fifth floor of the Harrison Global tower.
The Grand Boardroom was a masterpiece of corporate arrogance. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls looked out over the Manhattan skyline. A thirty-foot mahogany table was surrounded by twelve executive board members, dressed in thousands of dollars worth of custom tailoring, sipping sparkling water and whispering among themselves.
At the head of the table sat Richard Vance.
Richard was the Vice Chairman of the Board—a smooth-talking, seventy-year-old corporate politician who had spent the last decade trying to wrestle control of the company away from the aging Harrison Carter.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard said, tapping a silver pen against his crystal glass to bring the room to order. "We've been waiting for over forty minutes. Harrison Carter promised us his mysterious successor would address the board today. Yet Harrison is absent, and this 'successor' is nowhere to be found. Frankly, I find this disrespectful to the board and to our shareholders."
"Harrison’s health is failing, Richard," said Evelyn Vance (no relation, but a staunch ally), leaning forward. "The market demands stability. If Harrison cannot present a viable candidate today, the board must exercise its contractual right to elect a new Chief Executive Officer from within."
"Precisely," Richard smiled, adjusting his silk tie. "I have already prepared the emergency succession motion. I am prepared to step into the role of Acting CEO immediately—"
BOOM!
The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom were thrown open with such violent force that they slammed against the marble walls, echoing like a cannon shot.
Richard snapped his head toward the entrance, his face darkening with anger. "What is the meaning of this?! This is a private executive session!"
Logan Carter walked into the boardroom.
He didn't walk alone. Behind him stepped four federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York, accompanied by eight armed federal agents carrying heavy evidence boxes.
The twelve board members gasped, several of them standing up in shock.
Richard’s eyes narrowed as he looked at Logan. He didn't recognize him. "Who the hell are you? Security! Get these people out of here!"
Logan walked straight to the head of the mahogany table, pulled out the heavy leather chair reserved exclusively for the Chairman of the Board, and sat down. He rested his hands flat on the polished wood, looking at Richard Vance with a cold, piercing stare that made the older man’s breath catch in his throat.
"Sit down, Richard," Logan said.
"How dare you speak to me like that!" Richard thundered, slamming his fist on the table. "I am the Vice Chairman of Harrison Global!"
"You were the Vice Chairman," Logan corrected him calmly. "As of four minutes ago, the majority shareholder—Harrison Carter—transferred his full fifty-one percent voting control to his son and designated successor."
Logan reached into his suit jacket and laid a heavy, gold-embossed legal document on the table, alongside his platinum executive badge.
"My name is Logan Carter," Logan announced, his voice vibrating through the glass walls. "And I am the Chief Executive Officer of this company."
A collective gasp swept through the room.
"Harrison’s son..." Evelyn whispered, her face going pale. "The one who spent ten years in overseas logistics?"
Richard tried to maintain his composure, though a nervous twitch had developed under his left eye. "Even... even if you are Harrison’s son, you cannot simply march into a board meeting with federal agents! This is an outrage! It damages our stock value!"
"What damages our stock value, Richard," Logan said, leaning forward, "is the fact that forty-two million dollars was funneled out of our compliance division over the last eighteen months into an offshore shell company called Aegis Holdings."
Richard froze. Every drop of blood vanished from his face. "I... I have no idea what you're talking about. That’s an internal operational matter for lower management—"
"Aegis Holdings," Logan interrupted, picking up a folder handed to him by the lead federal prosecutor, "is registered in the Grand Cayman Islands. The primary beneficial owner of Aegis Holdings is a panamanian trust."
Logan opened the folder and slid a single sheet of paper across the thirty-foot table. It stopped directly in front of Richard Vance.
"And the sole beneficiary of that Panamanian trust," Logan said softly, "is your son, Richard Vance Jr."
The boardroom went deathly quiet. You could hear the faint patter of rain against the outer glass windows.
Richard stared at the paper, his mouth open, unable to form a word.
"You didn't just turn a blind eye to Vanessa Brooks’ corruption on the fourteenth floor, Richard," Logan revealed, his voice dropping into a lethal, razor-sharp edge. "You engineered it. You placed Vanessa in that department three years ago specifically to create a blind spot in our compliance network. You used petty bullies like Derek Walsh and Paula Simmons to drive out honest auditors who got too close to the truth."
"This... this is a conspiracy!" Richard yelled, his voice shrill with panic, looking around at the other board members for support. "He's making this up! He's trying to purge the board to consolidate power!"
"Richard Vance," the lead federal prosecutor stepped forward, pulling a gold badge from his jacket. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement."
Two federal agents stepped up behind Richard’s leather chair.
Before the eyes of the entire board of directors, the powerful Vice Chairman was forced to stand, turn around, and have his wrists cuffed behind his back.
Richard looked at Logan, his face twisted with pure, hysterical rage. "You ruined me! You played a dirty game, Carter!"
Logan stood up slowly, looking down at the handcuffed executive with absolute disdain.
"I didn't play a game, Richard," Logan said coldly. "I worked on the floor you spent ten years ignoring. I sat in the broken chairs, I cleaned up the corrupted files, and I listened to the people you stepped on."
Logan stepped closer, leaning down to whisper in Richard’s ear.
"A company isn't built in the boardroom, Richard. It's built on the floor. And today, the floor took its company back."
As the federal agents dragged Richard Vance out of the boardroom, Logan turned to face the remaining eleven board members, who were sitting rigid, terrified, and completely silent.

Logan adjusted his suit jacket, placing his hands back on the mahogany table.
"Now," Logan said calmly. "Let's discuss the reorganization of Harrison Global."
