Chapter 1 - The Predator in the PantryThe heavy oak door of the dark pantry clicked shut, sealing Khloe inside the suffocating shadows of the east wing. The smell of stale whiskey and cheap cologne hit the small room instantly. It was Lorenzo Costa.

Khloe did not stop polishing the silver platter in her hands. Her thumb moved in slow, deliberate circles over the tarnished metal, her expression entirely deadpan. She knew he had followed her. Men like Lorenzo believed that power meant the right to claim whatever they desired, especially when they felt slighted in public.
"Turn around, little maid," Lorenzo sneered, his footsteps closing the distance between them. "You think you can humiliate me in front of Senator Hayes and walk away? You ruined a four-thousand-dollar suit."
Khloe finally set the platter down on the wooden workbench. She turned slowly, keeping her eyes cast downward in the performance of total submission. "I apologize, Mr. Costa. It was an accident."
"Accidents have consequences," Lorenzo whispered, stepping into her personal space. His hand shot out, grabbing a fistful of her starched maid's uniform near her collarbone, dragging her upward. "You've got spirit under that filthy rag. I wonder how much fight is left in you after I teach you some manners."
He raised his free hand, fingers curled into a heavy slap meant to strike her across the face.
Khloe’s muscles tensed. The ancient training of the Famiglia dei Lupi—instincts carved into her flesh alongside the star-shaped burn on her ribs—screamed at her to react. In less than a second, she could dislocate his shoulder, shatter his windpipe, and leave him gasping for air on the dusty floorboards.
Not yet, a voice in her head warned. If you expose yourself here, Nicholas Moretti’s men will find you. The war will begin.
She forced herself to relax, letting her body go limp to sell the illusion of a terrified, helpless servant.
Before Lorenzo’s hand could connect, the pantry door blew open with a violent crash that rattled the hinges.
The cold air of the hallway swept into the room, carrying a presence so absolute and suffocating that Lorenzo froze mid-swing.
Nicholas Moretti stood in the doorway.
His dark eyes were like shards of black ice. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. The sheer weight of his silence commanded absolute obedience.
"Lorenzo," Nicholas said softly, his voice cutting through the dim air like a razor. "Is this how a capo entertains himself while my guests are downstairs?"
Lorenzo released Khloe’s collar instantly, stumbling backward. Sweat beaded instantly on his forehead. "Nicholas—Boss. It’s nothing. Just a clumsy servant who ruined my clothes. I was merely... disciplining her."
Nicholas stepped into the pantry. He ignored Lorenzo completely, his gaze locking onto Khloe.
She stood frozen, head bowed, her hair shadowing her face. But in the brief second before she lowered her eyes, Nicholas saw something that stopped his heart. He saw the cold, unblinking composure of a trained apex predator hiding behind the mask of a frightened maid.
"Leave us," Nicholas ordered without breaking eye contact with Khloe.
"Boss, I can explain—"
"I said, leave us, Lorenzo. Before I decide your suit isn't the only thing of yours that needs to be permanently ruined."
Lorenzo didn't wait for a second warning. He scrambled backward out of the pantry, the door slamming shut behind him.
The room grew dead silent. Only the heavy breathing of the storm outside could be heard against the reinforced glass of the distant windows.
Nicholas stepped closer to Khloe. He reached out slowly, his calloused fingers brushing against her cheek, tilting her face upward so she had no choice but to look at him.

"You aren't a maid, are you?" Nicholas whispered, his voice laced with sudden, electric realization.
Khloe looked into his dark eyes, knowing her cover was slipping away.
