Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the SyndicateThe commotion in the east wing echoed down through the grand staircases, drawing the attention of the guests in the ballroom. Senator Richard Hayes and several high-ranking cartel leaders stepped out into the main foyer, demanding answers.

They were met by Enzo Cortez and a wall of armed syndicate guards blocking the entrance to the corridor.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Enzo announced loudly, his voice carrying authority across the marble floors. "The gala has concluded. Please gather your coats and proceed to the exits. Internal security protocols are now in effect."

"What is the meaning of this?" Senator Hayes demanded, his face flushing red with indignation. "I am a United States Senator! You cannot simply—"

"Senator," a cold, commanding voice interrupted.

Nicholas Moretti walked out from the east wing corridor. His shirt cuffs were slightly rolled up, and his hands were clean, but the dark, terrifying aura around him made every single person in the foyer step back. Behind him, two guards dragged a battered, unconscious Lorenzo Costa by his arms, leaving a faint streak of blood across the white marble.

Nicholas stopped at the top of the grand staircase, looking down at the assembled elite of the underworld.

"The old rules are dead," Nicholas announced, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "For years, men like Lorenzo Costa and those who fund them from behind closed doors have believed they could use violence, betrayal, and intimidation to control this city. That era ends tonight."

Senator Hayes paled visibly, sweat dripping down his neck. He recognized the look in Nicholas’s eyes—the look of a king executing a purge.

"Every ledger, every shell company, every corrupt official tied to Lorenzo's faction has already been secured by my men," Nicholas continued, his gaze locking directly onto the senator. "Senator Hayes, your campaign funds will be audited by sunrise. By tomorrow afternoon, federal authorities will receive a very comprehensive package detailing your offshore accounts."

"You can't do this!" Hayes stammered, backing toward the front doors. "We had an agreement—"

"Agreements made with weak men are meant to be broken," Nicholas said coldly. "Get out of my house. All of you. And if any of you ever set foot in my territory again, you won't leave in handcuffs."

Within minutes, the frightened guests, corrupt politicians, and broken capos fled the Aster Estate like rats abandoning a sinking ship. The great mahogany doors slammed shut, leaving the mansion silent once more.

Nicholas turned back toward the east wing.

Khloe was standing near the window, watching the snowstorm finally begin to clear over the Long Island hills. The artificial lights of the estate caught the sharp angles of her face, highlighting a quiet, profound sense of release she hadn't felt in five years.

Nicholas walked up beside her, standing shoulder-to-shoulder as they looked out at the quiet night.
